Open Headers = Damage to Motor???

A buddy of mine told me that running open headers was hard on a motor.

Any truth to that?

I plan on installing my headers then driving 80 mph down the highway for about 40 miles to my muffler shop to get the cat's and mufflers welded up.

I ran open headers to my exhaust shop, for cats and muffler but couldn't get above 40-45mph due to some serious bucking and snorting and such, my truck did not like them open at all. I also only drove about 8 miles to the shop so I am not sure if 40 at 80 mph would be o.k., plus it is so darn loud, I don't think you would wanna do 80 mph, I was kind of embarrassed at how loud it was, that truly was some redneck $h!t that day...

Open headers wont hurt anything, unless it screws with the 02's and how the computer reads them.

Well I planned on temporarily installing the resonators with the o2 sensors installed thinking that it would run ok then.

Yea I plan on it being louder than crap. I'll probabaly wear some ear plugs.

I'd run the resonators and do the gotts exhaust mod to get it to the shop, he's been running the resonators for a while now without issue

Good idea.

By the way I started another thread but no one has answered.

What are the resonators anyway?

I don't plan on using them.

if they are shorty headers i would advise against it, long tube you will be fine as long as your computer doesnt start acting up because of the lack of o2's...

I ran open headers on my Jeep for a day until I got the exhaust welded up. I have a SBC V8 in my jeep. Imagine people's faces when they heard me drive by. It was ridiculously loud. I liked it though, since the Jeep is a weekend cruiser.

My wife is gonna crap when I fire this thing up!

Yea it's gonna sound like the NHRA on I-70 the day I drive it to the muffler shop! Especially since I turn about 2600 rpm's when I drive 75mph!

I will probably just drive it a little and see how bad it's gonna be before I head out.

I could have it trailered up there but that will be kind of a pain in the butt. I'll have to borrow a truck and a trailer. Maybe I could clamp on the mufflers somehow right after the resonators or something.
