My OBX header install.

Well I got antsy last night and started tearing things apart.

Here's what I'm putting in. Longtube OBX headers.

The very first bolt broke and I thought it would be a long night but luckily that was the only one.

Ok so who knows the best way to get out that broken header bolt?

I tried a vice grips but that didn't work.

I know they have some kind of tools out there built just for getting out broken bolts but I don't have any experience with them.

Any idea's?
oh and by the way, there is about 1/2" of the bolt sticking out from the block.

First off - (im sure you did but i might as well ask) did you use a penetrator like PB blaster?

I did use PB Blaster. I sprayed them as soon as I got the wheels off then I sprayed them again about every 10 min for about 45 min or so.

I have always heard from guy's on here to let them soak for a few days but like I said I got a little antsy.

After the first one broke I took a hammer and tapped on the others before trying to remove them. I'm not sure if that helped or if it was just tha the PB Blaster had more time to do it's thing.

Oh yea, Another thing that I forgot about.

What did you guy's do with the dip stick tube on the passengers side?

It looks like if I can get it out of the block at the bottom, I could re install it after the headers are on but I couldn't figure out how to get it out of the block at midnight last night.

I don't want to have to drop the oil pan just to figure out how to get the dip stick tube out.

Do you have enough room to get a drill on that broken bolt? If so buy some easy outs and drill a pilot hole to the right size and try a easy out. They have been a life saver to me at work. If you cant afford them try and find a mechanic buddy and see if you can borrow one of his. I think I paid about $200 for mine on the snap on truck, but that was with left hand bits also.
Just make sure to soak it with a good penetrating oil.

I called my buddy who is a Ford Mechanic.

He said extracting broken header bolts was one of his specialty's. He's coming over tonight.

Does it pull out or what? I'm reading old posts now and Gotts says "you will probabaly break your dipstick tube pulling it out".

I pulled on it pretty hard last night but it wasn't budging.

I have no idea. If you break it, you can just go buy a new one for how ever much they cost. I think they're pretty cheap, but can't remember the exact price.

After reading somemore, it looks likt it will pull out but it's a PITA to get out.

Yeah it just pulls right out, might have to wiggle it a bit, mine came out rather easy. Vice grips didn't work? Thats what I used on most of my studs after soaking em, just enough to get em loose and did the rest by fingers. Just curious as to how long did it take to get both manifolds out, cause that passenger side was a major PITA... Good luck with the rest of the install.

I took the passengers side out first. It only took about 45 min or so on each side.

I have a body lift which looked like it helped quite a bit. Both sides came out really easy, I thought, compared to what most people say.

All except for the broken stud that is.

Tap on the end of the broken bolt to loosen it up, and slowly heat the cylinder head around the bolt. do not heat the bolt. if possible, put dry ice on the end of the bolt right before you heat the head. Keep the bolt soaked in penetrating oil.
