catalytic muffler?

i have a 97 f-150 4.6l and i got a new cherrybomb muffler and my dad was sayin that it wouldn't be legal because the stock muffler was also the catalytic converter or something like that, but in front and theres two pieces that look like catalytic converters, is that what they are? or is it in the muffler? i probably sound really stupid right now

You should be fine. You have two rear cats and two precats IIRC. If you didn't touch them you are fine.

I am in the same boat....I don't have any mufflers either....just cats. I know it seems weird but its the truth. Even the exhaust guy thought it was weird, and he even said that it didn't look like anything was ever taken off of it.

Catalytic converters are right on the sides of the transmission, the muffler is way back just before the axle. Two very different parts. The mufflers muffles down the sound, thats all.

Every vehicle comes out of the assembly plants with an exhaust. The original owner may have removed it.

which is what i thought at the time. However, I have two friends with 97 and 98 f-150's respectively, and both of them do not have mufflers either. Just the cats. After looking at both of them I dont think anything was taken off of theirs either. Now given, I am not a graduate of exhaust U but I know what mine looks like and theirs looks the same. I was confused when I looked at it, but it sounds BA and thats all that matters to me....
..this is hilarious and I just wanted to use it in a reply!
