Exhaust upgrade, no drone...

Okay the setup so far is...
2..4 5.4l 3V, K&N drop in filter, Xcal2.

Pending mod is the DWV mod (remove intake restriction).

I am wanting to improve the exhaust, but looking for ideas.

My goals are power, and efficiency improvements, not turning the heads of 16 year old girls. (at my age they'd haul me off to the old perverts home for that...).

I do NOT want loud, obnoxious exhaust, but a healthy deep tone would be nice. In cab droning is NOT acceptable at all.

I am hoping for a dual setup, with side exits, basically same location as stock, but one exit on each side of the truck...

What do you folks suggest for this application?

I was in the same boat as you, and ended up with a Magnaflow 18" body single in, dual out muffler, sized 2 1/2" inlet and 2 1/2" outlets. I kept the factory tailpipe on the passenger side, and had a local exhaust shop to add one to the driver's side. I then installed some simple 3 1/2" polished stainless tips to them, and kept them short to keep them under the edge of the truck. Overall, I'm very happy with the sound and look of the truck, however, I get a little drone on acceleration that is irritating at times. The muffler that I bought is the 5" x 8" body, and they have a 24" version of the same muffler, that I may swap to in the spring. I'm going to ride this one out through the winter, but I'd like to cut down on the drone I do have upon accelerating. It's definitely not what most on here would call bad drone, but I was shooting for zero drone at any time, and I'm not very tolerable of any extra in-cab noise. I'd suggest the 24" version of this muffler, or they make a 5" x 11" single in double out as well, that may be quieter.

stay away from most flowmasters then. My 50 kills me sometimes with the drone. But I heard the original 40s are really good. I would recommend the magnaflow though

Flowmaster is out. I would suggest a large magnaflow.

DarrenWS6,

How is your exhaust set up? Did you have it done by an exhaust shop or was it a kit? And better question. Is it street legal for an emissions testing state?

every flowmaster is going to drone (hence the nickname 'dronemaster') it doesnt matter what series. some just more than others. i personally love drone but you defnitely dont want any flowmaster then.

I have a corsa exhaust for sale which they are known for their unique muffler design that creates no cab drone while delivering more power and better fuel mileage gains through a straight through muffler design. They also have a very nice tone to them that is not loud and obnoxious.

I sent you a pm and e-mail about it. Just let me know.

Its 2.5" true dualed with Magnaflow 11" mufflers and tips.

Watch the first two minutes.

And its not quite legal since I removed my rear converters and am only running the front ones. If I could have had a shop replace all 4 with only two hi-flows it would be somewhat legal. You can smell that my exhaust is lacking cats when outside.

dbhost,

I wanted quiet and mild tone with acceleration. I went with Darren's reccomendation and put in a 22" Magnaflow si/do 2.5/2.25 out. It's part 14580 and it came from hotexhaust.com. I had a local shop do the piping and my exits just behind the rear wheels are 45 deg down with 30 deg bend out. All the piping is high up and barely visible, no tips.

It's as quiet if not more so in the cabin at all speeds than stock with a very (VERY) mild rumble when you mat the pedal. I lost no torque and picked up a little in the middle, right where I wanted it. Mileage about the same. Good luck.

Cool

I was just about to start a new thread and then I read this, the only thing I disagree with is you guys saying all flowmasters have some sort of drone.
It's been a week since I installed the magnaflows #12588 paid $425.00,I remember telling the guy I want the most quiet muffler you have.
I had flowmaster #70's on my 99 150 and they had no drone at highway speeds these do.And there just loud for me.
I can take them back or put up with the sound,I no it's my fault by letting him talk me into buying them. They did a perfect install and they look great coming out the back with rolled stainless steel tips
If I do take them back what can I put on that are quiet and can't hear the drone in the cabin.
THANKS
