4.2L dual cats?

i just bought my 2000 F150 XLT, with the 4.2L V6, 5spd and less than 60k miles. i was very surprised to find that it has true duals from the engine to a pair of cats, then combines into one muffler.
that's right - 2 cats dumping into one muffler. it looks completely stock - is it?

if it is, i just don't understand why ford would spend the money for a pair of cats, then save money on one muffler when they could have a complete, true dual exhaust! what am i missing?

obtw - my interest in duals is limited completely to performance. i like a nice sound as much as the next guy, just not enough to pay for it unless i get performance with.

having said all that, can i assume that putting duals in from the cats back, say with the magnaflow xpipe avfrog showed us, and flowmasters, would result in increased performance of some kind - power, mpg?

thanks for your time
joe

The "pair" of cats is emissions for ya. The single muffler is for sound deadening. Duals and 4.2 don't mix! Performance gain with your idea? Not so much... After reading your obtw, I would leave it only. Spending money on it will not justify the performance increase.

I would disagree Ty, chambered mufflers if anything for a V6. The only straight thru I would suggest is a bullet.

avfrog, thanks so much for your answer - that's exactly why i joined this forum. i've only got so much money to spend, and it would be very annoying to spend it on something that doesn't help....

openclasspro#11: sp? vp? remember who you're talking to... i'm the guy that put an ignition filter for my CB radio on a diesel...

guys, thanks so much for your time!

basically, openclass is saying 2.25" true duals, X pipe, and mufflers of your choice. I would try the Magnaflow 14" round bodies, real loud & deep, not constantly groaning loud.

But he doesn't want to spend money for a very small power increase...

But he wants a deep sound sound, and that will do it.

I thought i said that i am not interested in sound... I'm looking for power and mpg. as to how much it costs for how much increase, that helps me decide what to do first - doesn't mean i won't eventually do it. i don't know for a fact, but i don't see solutions such as what Darren says Openclass is referring to, would be all that expensive.

i intend to do all i can before getting into the motor. Even then, i may do no more than a blue-printing job. From what i remember from my youth, getting into the motor, regardless of performance gains, invariably meant a drop in reliability and durability. OK if you're competing; that comes with the territory, but not for a truck that has to be running every monday morning...

thanks for your time guys - your experience is going to save me tons of money and time!
