dual vs single exhaust?

dual vs single exhaust?
Right now i have dual exhaust with my rear cats removed and di/do flowmaster, dumped in front of axle.
I was wondering if there would be power gained or loss if i went back to a y pipe and single exhaust? Or leave it and throw in a x pipe? Or if i should i put 2 si/so mufflers on there?
I bring this up because i will be getting my infamous manifold leak fixed this week and i figured while i was there i might change some things.
Thanks

Toolman i've had my exhaust setup before with 2.5" true dualed straights and rear convertors removed. With an X-pipe installed it sounded like a muffler installed. The exhaust still had the pop but even with my shift points set at 5500 rpms their wasn't any raspiness or deceleration popping. To me it sounded like I had a magnaflow muffler installed. With the x-pipe installed I noticed a slight bottom end torque increase and a little top end loss over the straights but nothing extremely noticeable. Today I went and had a y-pipe installed with a 3" straight pipe ran out behind the rear tire. It sounds great not raspy no deceleration popping and it get's quiet when cruising but will still let out a loud growl when I mash the go pedal. I also noticed a gain in the low end with this setup over true dualed straights and the top end hasn't changed from what I can tell. I have also had two single in single out 40 series flowmasters dumped before the rear axle on my truck. I ran this setup for about 3 months and couldn't take it anymore. The flowmasters took away lowend torque and sent my top end power into hybernation. I hated them. I don't have any dyno charts to back up my claims but my seat of the pants dyno seems to be fairly accurate. I highly recommend the 3" single exhaust. It seems to be the perfect balance between sound and power.
