my setups stock everything back to the rear axle where the 2.5" pipe goes into a SI/DO flowmaster with dual tips under the bumper. last year before prom i wanted to liven it up a bit, so i chopped the pipe before and after the muffler and threw her in the bed. so i had stock headers, stock cats (2), and y pipe to 2.5" pipe dumping right before the rear tire with no muffler at all, three times as loud as the flowmasters (which beat the heck outta stock to start with). soon as i get the money im throwin on some longtubes to 3" pipe with high flow cats to xpipe to 4.5" tips 45in out under my bumper. i should almost need a louder radio to hear tunes over that at all.

if in cail you arent required to have a muffler just the cat's with pipe run out the back sounds gooood. or get them "Fake cats" that pass the vision test but not the sniffer.

I would change the muffler depending on exactly what you are looking for as far as the tone of it goes. Do you like the Flowmaster tone, but you just want it louder? ect...

fake cats sound good. but im pretty sure here in va running with no cats is a huge huge no no. compared to no muffler which is like 25 bucks. and when your truck has got quite a few things that aint quite legal everytime you drive (exhaust, tinted windows, flags) that attention can come back to bite ya in the ****. btw, i fully recomend forgetting the muffler. if you got one on now you could even sell it to cover the cost of redoing your exhaust to break even. to a really nice straight pipe setup

If you want to still have a muffler, trade in the FM-40 for a pair of FM-10s, Bullets or SLP LM1s.

Go spend an hour or two on Youtube listening to different set ups if you haven't already.

OMG he said it... "for back pressure or mpgs"

Having a muffler compared to not having a muffler will NOT increase fuel mileage. And lets not get started on back pressure... Lets just say you don't want none

CALI laws...

You can not touch the cats!!!! The only thing you can do is add shorty headers, run straight pipe or any muffler that is loud (bullet, slp lm 1, flowmaster 10 series, flowmaster outlaw etc) and run a different diameter pipe (single exhaust 3" will be the loudest). Also adding a CAI will make the exhaust a little louder as well.

Perfect Califorinia style exhaust right there.

And fail emissions and get fined $10,000.

Technically touching the cats isn't a Cali thing... its federal. In ANY state it is not legal to remove or modify a functioning cat, but most states don't care or don't want to spend the money to enforce it. Cali law states that ANY (no db specifications) modification the stock exhaust system to increase noise is illegal... trust me I have been ticketed before and tried like hell to fight it until I was given the law in writing. Only ricers and mustangs get ever popped for exhuast around here though. If you were to use hollow cats, you would have to have the worlds best tune and a squeeky clean motor to pass even the worst maintained sniffer.

Make friends with someone at an inspection center and don't drive like an idiot and you can do whatever you want to your truck.
