My first exhaust setup...

My truck: 2009 F150 5.4L SuperCrew 6.5ft bed.

Hello everyone. I've noticed the high number of "new exhaust setup" questions lately so my apologies for adding another one.

I've done quite a bit of research, so my questions aren't so much about which muffler... louder... quiter etc.
They're more along the lines of what will work, ie: good for the truck.

I don't care about being super loud, and really want very little to no drone. So I've read that the larger mufflers will give me that.

So this is the muffler I've chosen.
http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...e=main&id=8082
Magnaflow 24" si/do 3" in 2.5" out.

I'm also going to put dual tips on each exit.
http://www.borla.com/products/produc...?cat=3&type=61

So, with that in mind. I hear a lot about losing torque etc. I certainly don't want to lose torque because I tow a boat.

I'm also a bit confused because I thought there were 2 "mufflers" in the stock set-up, one being the Cat and then the actual muffler, but I looked under my truck and there's just the one big muffler that I see.

Also the piping is 2.75" into the muffler, not 3". So will that muffler above work?

Do I need an X pipe with this kind of set-up?

I've included a drawing of what I saw under my truck, Seems to me that I should replace everything from that Flange back, but there is this little box attached to the exhaust which I don't know what it is.

Anyway, I'm open to hear what ya'll have to say.

Go with a cat back system and the install will be a lot easier. It will cost more but for me the convenience of a complete system was more important then cost. Plus I can put my stock system back on if I ever need/want to. A 24" muffler would probably be pretty quite my kit (#16518) came with a 18". The best deal I found was through www.hottexhaust.com. Enter veedub under coupon to save 25% on the kits.

You bring up a good point. I had considered the whole system, but in doing that I don't get to pick the muffler OR the tips I want.

Also, where is the Cat? I don't see one.

#16518, is that Magnaflow?

Edit: Just checked the Magnaflow site. They don't even make a kit for the 09 F150.

Beautiful truck. You only have that big stock muffler. The "Cat" referenced is the CATalytic converter. Those are located up near the front tires where the headers come off the motor and before your referenced "flange." I assume that you are taking the muffler and the tips to an exhaust shop to get it put on. If so don't worry about the 2.75" pipe. Your exhaust shop will take care of mating everything up so that it fits. Typically, the exhaust shop customizes everything from the "flange" back.

Just about everyone on here (at least the SIDO folks) runs 3" back from the "flange" to the aftermarket muffler.

And props on the drawing.

The 24" body will be nice and calm, but to be honest, your exhaust system really doesn't neewd to be altered unless you want sound, and dual tailpipe look. Since they put 2.75" exhaust on the new trucks with a straight through muffler, they flow great. Torque is there, no need to change it. Thats also why they are louder than the previous model.

If you want more volume change the muffler. The 24" Magnaflow will give a deeper grunt though, but I would morely suggest the 18" body which comes in the Magnaflow cat-back kits, which are real calm inside.

These trucks only come with one single muffler. They all come with catalytic converters which aren't mufflers. An important part of the OBDII emissions efficiency systems, and to keep legal. The thing near the Y pipe is a weight balancer since the pipes on the inlet/outlet of the muffler are offset. That piece helps dampen vibration from the exhaust,

Hey, thanks for all the info. You just put me at ease.

Ok, so the cats are up there. I figured they must be somewhere I didn't look.

Yes, what I had in mind was to just get the muffler and tips I wanted and take it all to a shop near me and have them pipe it up.

So what is that attached thing just aft of the flange?

And props on the drawing.
LOL, thanks. I figured a little visual would help. But I'm sure you guys know the underworkings of your trucks much better than me.

I see what you're saying here. I had an '05 and you're right, the stock exhaust on this '09 has a little bit more grumble to it.

I guess I'd want something with just a bit more grumble/lower tone than stock. I think I may end up trying the 24" one and if it's not enough step down to the 18" body.

That's really my main concern is finding that happy-medium of a little grumble and no-drone. Gotta keep the wifey happy on those road trips.

So now I'm digging deeper into the muffler choice.
What would be the difference between:
Magnaflow 5x11x22" oval
Magnaflow 5x8x24" oval (my original choice)
Maganflow 5x8x18" oval
?

The 22" and the 24" I imagine would sound pretty similar. They would be quiet... very quiet. I would almost wager that they would be quieter than stock in the cab and close to the same volume outside. The small (by comparison) 5x8x18 is generally regarded as being a pretty quiet muffler and is going have about the same low level of drone as stock. Most people wouldn't notice that you had even swapped the muffler out with the larger 2 since the newer trucks are louder stock.

Interesting!! Thanks for the input.
This is definitely leaning me more towards the 18" one.
