Open headers

Alright, welp...i got my Lt's on. Rite now it's just open headers and it's LOUD!! I'm a little irritated bc they were a bitch to get on. First off, drivers side on like the bottom bolt on the 3rd primary, you couldn't even get the bolt to slide into the flange hole, so we had to beat the hell out of it just to get the bolt in then we still couldn't get a socket in there even with the motor mount off and the engine jacked up, that was pacesetters fault. Maybe i got a crappy set. Also i broke off my engine dipstick tube and my egr tube bc they were so rusted on. The egine dipstick tube and that one bolt took use a while, that sucked. And another big thing is the O2 sensor on the right side. It doesn't work on mine bc the front diff drive shaft is in the way so ill have to get a new bung put in. The Passanger side went smooth alot quicker. The only thing that gave me a problem on this side is I broke off one of the top studs, but luckily bc it didn't break of inside the head we were able to get it out with a pipe wrench. I haven't really got a chance to drive it hard but it seems to have more. I think when i get the new o2 bungs for the sensors and the cats put in it'll run like a champ. Also i think that it needs backpressure too, so i'll get the exhaust done soon too. I'll post a video here in the next week when i take care of it all.

Here are a couple open header video's that i took with my cell phone. One of the start up and idle. Video's don't do the loudness justice tho as most of you prolly kno! lol These are crap, but ill post better ones within the next litte bit that are a lil bit better quality...lol

Congrats! Told yuh they would be fun fun fun. Yea those bolts are a PITA. You definitly have to run them in first and back out again before trying to mount the headers.

Im gonna have to try and "massage" the dr header some more bc my front drive shaft yoke doesn't clear it either i was noticing, glad i didn't put it in 4wheel drive! lol It needs like about 1/8-1/4th inch more to clear it when it spins. I'll try a pry bar then if that fails, it'll be unbolting the yoke from the diff and a hammer....lol

I just plugged the egr hole on the header and got the egr tube welded shut where it broke. Drilled out the oil dip tube got a replacement, RTV, Changed the oil, high power magnet lol, and fresh oil. That was a job. Passanger side went smooth, except for a lil trimming on the motor mount!

Wow! I thought you had a 5four ? I'm confused, the header should be even close to the driveshaft - 4six or 5four ?

They must have changed these headers, - made them more of a PITA.

4six...i can't get the o2 sensor in bc of the front drive shaft, it was alright until i lowered the motor,(did it n driveway) then the next day in the daylight i noticed i won't beable to get it in. The yoke behind the front diff....when i rotate it, one side of it scrapes the header, but still spins by it and the other side of the yoke hits it enough that you can't spin past it.

I don't know if i was slow doing it or what but it prolly took about 17hrs with all the problems i ran in too!

Do i need to buy a new egr tube or will it be fine welded up and the egr bung pluged on the header?

Well , I feel for you guys with the 4six 4x4's. Shifty85 made it sound easy for his 97 4six, BUT his was 2wd. - and I thought the 5four was a PITA.

I know I explained the EGR in the PM's, -somewhat. I've never did a 4six, but what you have to do is see if your stock threaded nipple on the old manifold will thread into the headers EGR bung. 4six and 5fours are different. The 5four is larger @ the thread end. I did use a 4six EGR pipe for awhile, but I had to cut and turn it do to the 5four's different valve position. Plus I couldn't get it to totally seal

If you want to cap it, you'll need a plug and a large flat washer. Without the washer, it will leak, - trust me , it will leak even with the correct plug threads, you need the washer.

I have pics of both 5four and 4six pipes (EGR Connections), - I'll dig them up if you want them. Deleted all my pics recently because I couldn't find anything anymore lol. I saved and filed them tho and will upload what you need. Just tell me what.

If you can weld it in, weld it! Take pics of that , I want to see it done lol.

haaha...yeah i was hoping for like 5hrs...haha 17hrs...lol Atleast i can laugh at it! lol
Damn, i just assumed that the egr tubes were interchangable with the 4six and 5four. I have the egr bung plugged up but Thanks for the heads up on the washer! And yeah if you wouldn't mind getting those pics for me, that'd be great! I haven't decided what i'm gonna do yet, i'm gonna take it one step at a time. lol I gotta atleast get the all the o2's in and the cats on. I really can't wait till i get it running right again and some exhaust!
