Adding Y-pipe to 3inch SI/SO=SI/DO?

Hey everyone was trying to find some quick input if it would be good or bad, backpressure wise on possibly adding a 3 inch Y-pipe behind a 3" SI/SO muffler and running 3" tail pipes to 3.5 tips? Is that to much open piping, also planning on adding 94106s as well?

Ive read where 2.5 or 2.25 was best with dual piping.. But Im thinking of switching up to duals on my truck just by via a Y-pipe and trying to save some cash by utilizing my already present 3 inch exhaust setup and piping I have on it now, instead of starting all over by having to buy two new tips, and pay extra for piping when I could just keep whats on it now but add another pipe and tip and a y-pipe. Any problem with doing so? Or just start over from scratch, I dont want true duals, nor an X-pipe.

Pretty much inspired to have the sound of Bradley's 08fx4 which is awesome, thats my plans now!

just go your 3" single to dual 2.5's..... you'll still need new piping after the y tho.....

The 2.5" and 2.25" dual recommendations are for true dual applications. You would be just fine running 3" tails with your 3" single system, as long as you do not have the OEM Y pipe up front. There really wont be much difference from 2.5" tailpipes though.

I have factory cats and factory y pipe before the muffler, but do plan on replacing the cats with 94106s.

I been reading some more you would kinda think having 3 inch tails may be to big.. right?? but maybe not in this case considering I would still be running cats, the stock y, to SI/SO muffler, then back into a y? Thanks for your replies, just didnt want to waste money if I could keep one side of my current exhaust thats already on and 45'd out the passenger side and simply just add a y and another side of 3 inch piping.

Tailpipes wont really effect things since the muffler is the main disturbance in velocity, and it does its job at creating tone and passing the fumes. You can run the thicker tailpipes but there wont be any real sound gain from them.

thanks for the input Darren-

I plan on 94106s next regardless, then eventually going with a Magnapack 3 SI/SO with 3 inch-Y, I figured if I keep what I have but add a Y- and another side of 3 inch piping and add a new tip.. in the end it probably save me about $75+ bucks b/c Id have to buy two new tips instead of one regardless but didnt know if 3 inch was to big. Guess not. thanks for your input!

Hello Emperor!

How is your second day on the new job?

I believe, in the OP's case, the single biggest restriction will be that dang pesky factory 'Y'. I was amazed at the constriction inside when I took mine off.

To get the best out of this system with either the hiflows or not, that 'Y' really needs to be addressed.

And remember - it's a 4.6 ... not going to get the same audible results as that 08 FX4 5.4 3V used as the goal.

OP - this is a common, 'for looks only, feel good' type of mod - yer good to go on that score.

Just thinkin' out loud here - nevermind me

You'll be fine with the 3" tailpipes since you're not going true-dual.

The size of the tails isn't going to change anything because its so far back and the exhaust gasses are pretty cool (comparatively) so the large volume of pipe would be similar to if it were just dumped, but you would be better off putting that nice new Y in place of the factory y instead. I could be wrong, but I don't think high flows are going to open up the exhaust as much as replacing that Y.

Ok, thanks for the replies. Im flip flopping daily and still havnt ordered anything, Im thinking of keeping the SI/SO setup now to save some $, and just replacing the 14'' Magnaflow with the Magnapack and switching to a new tip out the back to a rolled 4"' x 12 inch long Magnaflow tip.

What would the sound gain be with still keeping the two stock cats and changing from the 14 inch Magnaflow Oval to the 14" 4"round Magnpack SI/SO, Still sound good just louder? I think I want to wait and do the 94106s as a last resort if I need a little more sound after experimenting different mufflers..

One thing about 3" tailpipes though, my 2.5" spare, and 255/70/17 spare tire, there is only 1/4" clearance between the pipes and spare. So good luck making 3" pipes fit.

I already have 3 inch tailpipe ran out the back behind rear passenger tire with a 3.5 slash cut tip, I was talking of now just replacing that tip with a 4 inch one rolled magnaflow tip instead and simply just replacing the 14 inch with a mangapack.
