Doing true dual with high flow cats on stock truck...need tune?

I am looking to do the magi high flow cats amd either the all in one x pipe muffler or the seperate x with 2 mufflers on my 05 screw. The truck is 100% stock as of now....do I need to have it tuned? I know I will get a cel light probably from the high flows. I can live with that for now. I will eventually get it tuned but I am going to be swapping in a new motor and maybe the hot rod cams. The truck is just running so bad right now I don't want to tune it yet. I think the cats are just about cloged...cel for faulty knock sensors...tick from the bottom end...loosing oil pressure I think making the cams act erratic. It bucks pops shimmies and all if I try anything more than slight throttle.

no tune needed

get that thing running right before you start modding it

P.S. you have an 05 if you have the 5.4L V8 the problem you're describing sounds like the notorious cam phaser issue.

I thought it might be the cam phaser issue but its definitely not. The sound comes from the bottom end where it hooks to the trans...I am thinking a bearing or something down there around the crank. It ticks right at startup cold or hot and ticks faster with the rpms. If the motor is ice cold it will run ok for a few min but once slightly warm its falls on its face backfiring and bucking if you give it gas. I think its loosing some oil pressure once it warms and since the cams run off oil pressure its making it drive badly...along with cats being possibly clogged and 140k on the sparkplugs and faulty knock sensors. I think the oil pressure is off because there is a way to make the odometer area read out some diagnostics and oil pressure is one of them and it reads 000's. I am not sure what it should read but I dont think all 0's is right. I also had this issue with a f250 work truck. I am looking at the exhaust stuff now because it will end up being a month or so for the new motor and im curious if the cats are really clogging up and if its effecting how it runs.

Since its a 2005 5,4 3v you might also want to get the injectors checked.....

if you have this many miles on the plugs than i guarantee you that at least one of the plugs is fudged. get those changed, and as 88 racing suggested have the injectors checked.

No tune needed for hi-flow cats. You would only need a tune if you removed all the cats. You could also just remove the rear cats and get the same effect as the hi-flows.

I am sure one of the plugs are messed up and I know about the injector issue. There is a ticking coming from the bottom end tho so my feeling is the motor needs to be pulled and rebuilt for that issue...and optimally at that time when its out I would like to refresh it all including the heads (and try and slip in some ford hot rod cams). So I am of the mindset to just swap the motor out since its probably more cost effective that way and at that time it would get the new style heads and different style plugs and while its out the knock sensors can be changed easy rather than dumping 7-800 on those changes with the old motor. So I am looking into that route....I think I can get a full drop in running longblock replacement from jasper for like 4500-5000 and everything would be new and the new style (cam phasers and spark plugs). In the meantime I was wanting to do the exhaust...

Also I thought my truck only has 2 cats not 4?

I have 141k on the truck now...so im out of there 120k extension right...or does the 120K add onto some other warentee that is in place making it really more than 120k?

Go with the separate X pipe mounted where the OEM Y pipe was and dual mufflers.

The only needed tune for exhaust would be to eliminate CEL from a converter change with improperly mounted sensors, or running no cats to run rich enough.

All trucks built in 2004 have 4. This includes early model 2005s. All trucks assembled Jan 2005+ have 2 larger cats. Peak under your truck by the trans and see how many you have on one side and you'll find out for sure.

I am pretty sure its only 2 cats then. I plan to get a tuner for it once I sort out the funky motor part. I am just looking to do this part first....

And I think I have decided to do a full magnaflow setup from partspedaler..high flow cats, x, 14"x4" round mufflers and 4x18" rolled tips out the back. If its too loud for the neighbors I might swap in some of the 18x4 mufflers. I go to the gym at 5am and they weren't so pleased to hear my mustang fire up that early before I got the truck as a 2nd vehicle. Its a 06 gt with a whipple no cats H-pipe long tubes and the frpp stinger mufflers

It's very fun...im running 12psi with the blower so about 490-500 to the ground with a built manual trans and a 305 drag radial out back.

I just hope the truck exhaust is not as loud as it or I'll have to think about changing something.

Not as bad as your Mustang, but it will be loud inside. Mine annoys me on hills.
