Exhaust system components question

I put a flowmaster muffler on my truck and it isn't even loud, i am thinkng that i should replace my cat with a hi-flow model. I was just wondering on my 1992 truck what is the thing behind the cat? Is that a second cat or is it a resonator. Do i need it for the truck to be legal?

Two cats. Ford uses two different types that work as a pair. You can remove both and replace them with a single high flow cat to keep it legal.

Changing or removing the cats will make a difference in the sound level, but I suspect you may have one of the more quiet Flowmasters, as most people don't comment on lack of sound with the 40s.

Thanks, i will try swapping the cat. If i can prove that my flowmaster 40 series isn't really a 40 series Truck Performance Center will get a very nasty phone call.
