I just painted my stainless steel ones. They were always discolored and I got tired of polishing them. I just used some flat black Tremclad I had laying around and so far so good. I figure even if I have to repaint them once a year I will be putting in less time than all the polishing I used to do.

I'm going to have mine at the rear bumper too. What kind of paint would be the most durable? They're going to be getting hit with mud and rocks a pretty good bit. You're probably right, I doubt they get hot enough to require high temp paint

like i said ive had them painted for about 4 mouths and they have seen a bit of mud and rocks. i don't have mud flaps and it's holding up pretty good and you can always repaint when they get bad. the vht stuff is pretty tuff when cured properly it has a ceramic base. i would recommend doing them off the vehicle in the oven. here is there web site http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/flameproof/
