Thumbs up Exhaust/Y pipe options ???

OK all, here is the ?

I am ready for my exhaust system to be installed.
I would like to go one of 2 directions.

1. Have a local shop in my area, modify the "Y" pipe, as such:

Cut out the left side of the "Y", and extend it to make more of
a "V" shape, then have a 10" piece of aluminized pipe replacing the right side.
Then, run a new 2.5" piece back, thru a New Dynomax RV/Welded muffler. And new tubing rest of the way back, coming out of a S/Steel tip.

2. Cut out everything aft of both Cat's, and install a new Bassani
Dual 2.25" in, single 2.5" out Muffler, running out the back, w/ a S/Steel tip.

I have been doing exhaust mods for years, on vehicles. Always improved when modifying FORD's, and seem to lose low end when modifying GM's.

Which one do you think would gain more Low End Torque / and Horse Power?

I still have some time to think it over, never in a big hurry, especially when it comes to power. Love to do plenty of research on my options. Besides, I have a '68 Ford Ranchero to tinker with.

Thanks again, Ranchero1968

Ranchero1968,
Did you look at this post by Jackal?:

Go with the full 2 1/2" inlet pipes to an aftermarket 3" Y or modified Y to your choice of muffler and a 3" single out pipe. Having this setup now, I am a believer and would not go to a smaller diameter system.

Thumbs up

I would agree with Area52. Do the aftermarket "Y" (2-2.5" inlets, 1-3" outlet) to the muffler of your choice with a single 3" in/out. Mandrel bent 3" single tailpipe exiting out the side behind the rear tire.

That will give you the best of both worlds. Great sound and no loss of low end torque.

I've got the Gibson SS already and will be doing the Y thing as soon as I get a chance and can catch my muffler guy without a car on his rack already. He takes no appointments, so it's first come first serve. I have to squeeze it in during work hours, so lunch is about it for now.

Exhaust/Y pipe options ???

Thanks Area 52 and Mitch 150,

I previously tried a 3" in and out, single pipe, on a GMC...

I lost an over abundance of low end torq/hp...

I gained some back, after going with an MSD ignition system.
I would rather not try that one again...

Thanks, R68

Unhappy

Ranchero,

Don't know what to tell you on losing all the power on the GMC with the single 3" in/out setup. Works great on the Fords. At least with my Gibson.

Good Luck!
