2000 f150 5.4 can I remove the clogged cats and leave off?

My cats are clogged at least one of them is. It's so bad that the engine shakes at idle and it won't pull itself over 60 mph. New fuel filter last week as well as new motorcraft coils an plugs. I would just like to remove the cats and leave them off and just keep the mufflers. It already has dual outlets out the back. The local auto repair shop said you can't do it on that truck the way it is designed. He said it will not run right and will get poor gas mileage if I leave them off. I feel like if they are off that it will flow a lot better and run better and get good mileage.

Can I do this or not. Our state doesn't require inspections and its not a problem worrying about that.

Your local repair shop is correct. You will have nothing but problems trying to run without the CATs.

https://www.f150online.com/forums/ex...-mod-pics.html Follow these if you do it. You can remove them. A good tune is recommended after this. I personally wouldn't do it just for the sake of having to deal with emissions.

Hi-flow cats aren't too expensive, and will keep the air somewhat more healthy compared to no cats.

Would that not be the same as removing them all together?? I just want to fix this the most inexpensive way, yet the best way inexpensively. I pull a 16 ft trailer alot with (2) tractors and need my truck running good. Maybe I should do a full exhaust system? I just hate to pay big bucks for something like a catylitic converter when it could possibly be avoided.

^ glc's reply was most likely sarcasm.

Just replace them with universal cats from magnaflow.

No, it was not sarcasm. It's a no-cost way to relieve the backpressure.

Yeah, that is what I've heard of doing...basically just "gutting them out". But as i said...isn't that the same as just removing the cats? Would that still make the engine run bad/get poor fuel economy?

Why the Magnaflow Cats?? I know they make some good stuff, but what would be wrong with just a regular universal cat? What about one from Flowmaster??

Since they are fixing the exhaust system, AND I am spending money, I think I'd like a good sounding and performance upgrading dual exhaust while they're working on it. Something I could get for around $700 out the door.
