I like the Gibson SS I have. Quiet, but has a nice rumble to it.

You can't run the Super Truck setup you describe without major modifications. If even then. Just not enough room on the drivers side to do it. The gas tank is right there.

I work with about 70 big rig truck drivers. Almost all of them drive pickup trucks for personal vehicles. And most all of them have done some kind of exhaust modification. Our chief mechanic ordered himself a Gibson single side exhaust kit directly from the factory. He said total cost was about $300 and the installation was very easy as no welding was required. Everything bolted on and fit perfectly. He said the hardest thing was getting the stock muffler and pipe off. He used his sawsall to get that job done. He is very happy with the Gibson.

The majority of the guys have Flowmasters installed. They are happy with their's too. They say that I can get one installed around here for about $140-$160 plus the cost of a tip. I think that is using their stock pipes, but I'm not 100% sure. One guy complained of his flowmaster being too loud (he also has a high flow cat converter and supercharger). He is planning to have another quieter Flowmaster put on.

I am told that Borla is really the hot set up for racers now, but be prepared to shell out about $700 as one of the guys here was quoted recently.

I have also heard good things about the Ravin exhaust. I know it is available at Midas shops, but not sure of the cost.

I am still trying to decide what setup to get myself. I have a V6 whereas most of the guys here have V8s. So, I am not exactly sure what they will sound like on my truck. Anyway good luck. Hope you found some of this info useful.

Maybe I used the wrong terminology. None of the exhaust systems I mentioned are designed specifically for "racing." They are all high performance systems that hopefully will give you more horsepower and torque while also giving you the potential for increased gas mileage.

Gibson is usually mentioned among the very finest systems.

Borla does make equipment for racing applications. They have a great reputation around the race track. So, many people think that the equipment they make for street applications is the best. Check out their web site. I think it is Borla.com. The drawbacks with Borla are that they don't make applications for every vehicle and they are a tad on the expensive side.

Thumbs up Like Mine

Just had my Gibson installed after leaving
it in the box for about 4 months. Went on
a '97 F150 4.6 with the AirAid Intake.

The Gibson Sweptside was installed by a local
that does good work. Welded on. Some hanger
problems, but nothing serious. He made a few
mods for no vibration (wasn't, just didn't want
it to) and cost me $75.

Noticed an immediate smoothness to throttle and
some much stronger throttle response. I also
USED to get a real 'blower' sound when i stepped
on it (noted right after the AirAid went on...)and
now much of that sound is muted (would imagine I
have an overall better flow through)...

Sound is not significantly different, and i did
not want noise, but there is a nice burble and
slight growl at higher RPMs...

Overall I could not be happier. Bought it on this
site at the 'store'...

Have the Sweptside, the AirAid and run Amsoil
0-5 wgt... also just replaced stock shocks with
some Monroe Reflex shocks, and they are nice.
Have Michelin 265x75 series and the truck is
running very well with nearly 100K on her...

I am glad I made the changes and glad I bought
the F150...

Congrats Doc!
I am sure you are enjoying it with a big ole grin.

I put my Gibson Dual Sport on today. I'm going to try and
do it myself... We have an Auto Craft Shop here on the
Army post with lifts and they only charge $5 bucks and hour.
I hope I can do it in less than 3 hours?? We'll see... at any
rate it should be cheaper than the $100 bucks a local
muffler shop quoted me.

Referencing your "blower noise", I have a K&N Gen II and
notice the same when I stomp on it. I'm curious to see if
I will notice the same results after I put on the cat backs.

We'll I let ya'll know how it goes later this evening.....Ta Ta
