Question Problem w/ 4WD -- any ideas?

Ok I was looking at an Expy for purchase and I noticed something wrong. I flipped the switch from 2WD to AWD and the light came on but that's it. Second, when I switched it to ANY of the other modes (except for 2WD), the light stays lit as "AWD" -- is that normal? The 4WD did not engage in any of the selector switch positions but I did hear a click from what sounded like a relay. Any ideas? The guy said the pumps are common to go out first. What do you all think?

More info. What year? Did you roll ahead after moving the switch? If you did move did you try turning the wheel sharp to feel if the four wheel is engaged?

Woops

Sorry -- this is for a 1997 Expedition XLT. I tried rolling ahead etc. The front wheels just didn't want to go. No matter what position the selector switch is in (except 2WD), it always says A4WD.. any ideas??

Question Ok

I just talked to a tranny guy who took a peek at it and he told me the pump/motor is bad (at the least). He said he manually spun the shaft and it turned so he's assuming it is just a bad pump. Does anyone know how much these run, and the best place for them? Thanks!!
