Traded Mine-
I was so scared of tranny problems that I traded my 2000 Expy, although I never had a lick of real trouble with it. I know several people with Expy's and those that have had problems, had problems with the tranny at or aound the 70,000 mile mark. After 3 years and 35,000 miles, I'd experienced only nusiance problems (WEather stripping coming off, lighter fuse, etc...) I had no drivetrain problems, but was nervous since I cheaped out and didn't get the extended warranty. Everyone I knew, Ford drivers as well as other manufacturers, all spent about $3,000 on transmission repair/rebuild/replacements.
Upon quizzing my friends again I found that the ones that had tranny problems, were all 4x4 owners. No one with a 4 x 2 of the 6-7 Expy owners I personally know, had tranny issues. One has 99,000 miles, and the other has about 127,000 miles on a 1998.
Personally, I couldn't fork over $3,000 to fix a car that I'm still making notes on; that was my fear. So, since I was getting the new-car itch anyway, I snagged a 2003, but THIS TIME, I got the 5-year, 75,000 mile Ford Warranty. $100 deductible.
With that warranty, a $100 repair (Unless I have to keep making it) wouldn't be anything to fuss about. But, facing a $2,400 repair, on a 4-year-old vehicle- that's supposed to be built to take the tough-stuff; your disdain is well justified.
Good luck!

'01 Expy Tranmission
I thought that I would share my Expedition transmission story with ya'll.
I had an '01 5.4l, 4x 2, Eddie Bauer, with 39.5k miles on it. I took it in for a minor transmission pan leak, from a previous service. My vehicle was returned to me, but right after I pulled off the lot (and I mean right after...) the transmission started acting up. I turned onto a side street, drove 20 more feet, heard a "ping" , and the motor started revving up. I limped back to the dealership and turned it back in to them. The transmission had lost 2nd gear due to a diode failure. Through research, I found that some 4R100 transmissions had a TSB (01-13-5) for this problem.
Ultimately, I had the vehicle fixed, drove it for a bit, but was never really comfortable with it, so I traded it on a new Expy (and an extended warranty).

Mo on FoMoCo Xmsns....
96 Windstar Replaced X2 before 75K
99 Explorer XLT (Spouse's) Rebuilt @ 53K
99 Expy EB (Mine) Rebuilt @ 35K
Very disappointing especially since I don't two anything. Dumped the Windstar and got the Expy....Lucky me. Got smart, dumped the Explorer (mar 03) and got her a 03 4Runner Limited. I got luck that night!!!
If only the build quality of Ford equaled their new design quality I'd buy another one.

To be fair, the other side of the story:
1990 F150, 225K miles, original trans still in place when sold 2001
1991 Bronco, 200K, original trans still in place when sold 2001
2000 F250 CC, original trans in place, now 60K, no problems
2000 Mazda MPV, original Ford trans in place, now 75K, no problems
2000 Expedition EB, just bought last night with 90K miles, original trans replaced at 3900 miles under warranty, no problems since (I spoke to the original owner). Shifts great right now.
Not ALL Ford transmissions are trouble, in fact I have never had one go out yet (perhaps I just jinxed myself).
