NOT very Happy w/ 03 EB Expedition!

I now have 11,700 miles on my new EB Expedition.

Problems thus far:

1) Both rear doors did not fit right and started rattling right away. Dealer fixed and the rattling subsided. Now they rattle again. Very annoying on bumpy roads. A $40K vehicle should not rattle this much!

2) Major brake dusting is very annoying. Cheap pads?

3) Developed a vibration when turning from a stop at around 7K. Have not taken it in for this problem. From this Forum it sounds like the Limited Slip clutch pack.

4) Brake fluid is BLACK! Going to have dealer check and flush. Hopefully. My Toyota SUV with 32K has perfectly clear brake fluid.

5) Leather drivers seat appears to be wearing very easily.

6) DEPRECIATION... OMG! Trade is around $26K on a loaded EB. $30K all day long for a used one with low miles. Sunk like a LEAD bowling ball.

I am starting to wish I had bought another Toyota. Like a Sequoa or maybe even the new Dodge Durango (335 HP and 0-60 in 7.5 sec with a 6sp auto...WOW!)....

Probably going to keep this until I can get what I owe.

Is anyone else this annoyed with there 03 Expedition?

Not a happy customer. LAST Ford I'll buy...

not extremely happy with mine, other than i love the looks and features. Thats the only thing making me keep it right now. The only other vehicles i would want are a navigator (would have the same problems) or escalade. But until this year, i worked for ford for the past 9 years and thats all ive been buying. I have all the same problems as you, other than the door problems. Mine is getting ready to have the 4th rear axle put in it for a loud whine from 38-45 and from 55-62.

If i could get more than 26-28k for mine (has 10,000 mi) , i would try to find a 02 or 03 escalade for the same price, but i would need 30-31k, and i know i cant get that.

My EB is white as well. Same vehicle. I love the DVD system for my son. I also love the electric fold-down third row.

I too have a slight whine around 50 MPH. Not extremely noticeable, but there.

As soon as this snowy weather lets up, I'm going to take it in. They will probably keep it for 2 days. At least I get a free loaner!

I think the new Durango looks MUCH nicer! But again, the Durango's in the past have had more problems.

I dont know what I owe on it. Afraid to ask. I did get 0% financing and paid what the dealer said was invoice. But I rolled some negative equity from a muscle car into it. Was afraid that car was going to kill me. My son needs a father!

The latest Motor Trend is not very complimentary in its test of the 04 Expedition. They seemed to like the Sequoia and the Durango, the Expy was 4th out of 4. Guess I'll keep my 99, I still like it, no whines rattles or vibrations.

I think the depreciation you are seeing is pretty typical. Turning around a new car after only 1 year is about the worst way to deal, financially. A $35K vehicle is going to lose about 20% of it's value the first year, just count on it. Think about it - wouldn't you pay an extra, let's say $4000, to get a new car over a used one? That's what you are up against. If your 1-year-old Expy is that close to the price of a new one, the potential buyer is just going to get new. Some Hondas and other high-demand vehicles are the exception but I would still say your results are typical. I highly doubt the Yukon/Tahoe or the Durango can do any better.

On the flipside, I try to buy a 1-year-old as opposed to new just so I can be on the other side of this depreciation.

As soon as the wheels leave the lot it's worth a whole lot less than you paid for it.

i saw that motor trend too. expy was 4 our of 5. the tahoe was last. i'll take the expy over any of 'em. last year the rags were falling all over the '03 expy & the h2 scummer. the writers have to justify their jobs. I will say though the nissan engine is gonna sell some trucks for them.

YEs I will have to keep it for about 3 years before I get something new. On the possitive side, in 3 years they should have some pretty nice vehicles!!

I cant wait until a nice big Hybrid SUV comes out. I would love to have high Torque (elec motor), gas mileage, and be a little more green but NOT have to give up the room and saftey of a larger vehicle.

When you are used to driving an Expedition and then you get a loaner...Some little car.... WOW do I feel vulnerable on the road. If 6000 lbs hits 2500/3000 lbs. Who going to get hurt and whos not?

I want my son in the center of the 6000 lb vehicle!

Hey, the Expedition is not the worste car on the road. Its got its issues, but I still like driving it. Grass is ALWAYS greener, you know what I mean?

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger's.....all of us who write on the board get live through Ford's "Life Experience's". I've indicated before if Fords build quality equaled their design quality they would be #1 across the board. WCF's in a bind, either he has to spend more for better parts and assemblers or scrape by on less quality pieces and people and still show some small precentage of quarterly profit to the share-holders.

As for me, I've got a 99EB with 66K. So far:

replace #4 coil pack
rebuilt tranny
new multi stalk
new roof rack
new front seats
new rear wiper assy
new tie rods
new u/l ball joints
new 6CD changer

ALL before 35K!

Got the spouse an 03 4Runner Limited. Coming up on 1 year. Problems so far: Zilch!

You catch the drift. I get the 4Runner when the Expy starts to gasp. BTW, Since 35K I get a constant clunking when acccelerating or slowing down in precipitation and it likes to warp the brake rotors. Other than that it's great.

I had a 2000 Expy.

76,000 miles

Problems other than oil changes and brakes----NONE.

Best vehicle I ever owned.

Now I have a 2004 Expy with 5500 miles. Got it Nov 3.

Radio changed because it lost the front right speker when it was under 38 degrees out.

Nothing else so far.

Can't you get them to buy it back as a lemon? I thought 3 tries on the same repair was the limit.

Have they replaced the entire rear-end assembly, or just the innards? If not the assembly, I suspect a warped or bent axle tube or something along those lines. Having rear-end after rear-end go out is extremely rare. In 26 years of driving, I have had a grand total of ONE rear-end failure and it was on a Datsun truck with 150K miles on it.

I am wondering if you really have experienced a one-time failure that is being compounded by the service dept. not going far enough with the repair?

Oh, yeah, go to a used car lot and open the door on a 2000 model Suburban. I bet the door hinges squeak.

By the way, I think your Expy is damn good-looking.

the 03 and newer expy uses a independant rear end, so there are no axle tubes. When its been replaced, its the whole center section, prebuilt and ready to go. It bolts into place, the driveshaft attaches, and the cv axles spline in just like in a front wheel drive.

Also, as far as it being done right, I was a ford master technician at the dealership for 9 years, i dad all the rear end replacements myself excet this last one, because i no longer work there.

The rear end doesnt 'go out', any one of them would last forever, but the loud loud howl at speeds between 38-46 and then again from 52-65 will drive you crazy everytime you tip in to accellerate.

I expect this one will stay quiet for 1500-2000 miles like all the previous ones did, then i will be back in the same situation. The tag number didnt change for this replacement, which isnt good because that means nothing has changed inside the rear end unit.

On another note, i did get the new "low dust" brake pads, and will be going on a small trip tomm. , so i will report back in about 200 miles, the point where the other pads would turn the wheels almost black.
