Brakes on a 2000 Expy (Dealership)
Dealership quoted me $442 to replace the pads on my mother in-laws (My old) Expedition. I KNOW that price can be beat at any of the following:
a.) Just Brakes
b.) Meineke
c.) Midas
d.) Pep Boys
e.) Auto Zone.
My questions are:
1.) How long (Under normal driving conditions) can one expect a set of brakes to last?
2.) How thick are the pads when new?
The Service MGR tried to tell me that the pads (Which seemed OK to me) only had about 1,000 miles left in them before they could start causing rotor damage. He said the pad was 2mm thick in front, and 3mm thick in the rear. What I thought was interesting is that he knew this without having taken the wheel off the truck (As I'd mistakenly not laid out the wheel key for them to take the 20's off)
When you don't know people can tell you anything, I'm hoping there's some Ford Mechanics on here that'll tell the truth, or somebody that knows something about brakes.

Long time there Bighersh!
I had the brakes done by Bill Utter Ford on my Expy about 18 months ago at somewhere around 40k miles. I actualy got into the front rotors a day or 2 before the appointment to have it done. I had no warning before hitting metal to metal. Luckily they were able to turn and salvage all 4 of them.
I just looked and it was about $440 but they also replaced the VSS which I beleive was about $100-$120 and also repacked the front wheel bearings. I think that was it. They did an awesome job too!

440 bucks to replace brake pads! I'd punch the guy right in the mouth! Brake pads are what, 150 dollars for the front and rear together? That's 300 dollars labor to change brakes! I don't know what Ford charges for pads, but that's what Bendix Ceramic pads cost all the way around for a 2001 Expy with a 5.4. Something is pretty fishy there, I'd check out any one of the places you mentioned before I went with the craziness that the dealer quoted you.

Just refitted my 99EB 3 weeks ago @70K. Rotors were bad with lotsa hot spoots and were already turned X2. Went online to RockAuto and got 2 Raybestos VSG rotors for $73 each and the Raybestos Quiet Stops for $63 (front). Upgraded wheel bearings to TRW's for $60. I had installed the Quiet Stops all the way around @44K and when I inspected the rears this last time they looked great. Minimal dust and no more vibrating wheel when stopping.
