I need a brake job ......
My wife comes home and tells me she hears a grinding noise when ever she stops. I look at the brakes and the front rotors are all grooved up. Can they still be turned once they have grooves in them?
Also, How much (guesstimate) would it cost to have the front rotors turned and new pads put on? And do the back brakes last longer? The Expedition (2003) had 33,000 miles on it.

Just put a set of Powerslot rotors on the front on my wife's '03 Expy with 24k on it. The factory pads are GONE, the thing made more noise under hard braking than a Boeing 747 locking up at touchdown . I live in the Northeast, you would think lots of stop and go, but most of our mileage was from traveling to Florida and PA, ie., highway.
My thoughts, after owning 6 Ford products, their rotors suck (no other way to say it, sorry). They should be beaten with a stick for designing or approving the rotor/pad combo they put on their cars/trucks. The Expy is what, some 5500lbs +/-....it should have better brakes from the factory.
The new Powerslot - slotted, cadnium coated rotors and high performance pads were about $225 from www.brakewarehouse.com. The trucks stopping power and control is much much better.
To add...my Dad is a service advisor at a Ford/Nissan dealer, his techs and he gave me the advise.

PS. DO NOT turn the rotors, since by removing surface, you will be comprimising it's ability to disipate heat buildup. Go with new rotors, it pays in the long run, since they will last longer to the next service.

New rotors is best, but they do have a servicable thickness for a reason, if they didn't groove deep it can be turned out, and since the truck is not even 2 years old, age is not a factor.
Get ceramic pads, they will help with your black-on-silver wheels. I think the 2003 Expy's are the worst for brake dust. Good Luck!

Replaced front rotors, pads, bearings, and seals @ 72K. Went thru Rockauto online. Chose Raybestos VSG Rotors and Quiet Stop ceramic pads (supposedly the set Raybestos recommends matching to the rotors). Less than $200 for the rotors and pads.
2nd go with the QS creramics. Very good service.
