Steering Wheel Play?

Hello I just purchased a 99 Expedition EB 4x4 5.4L V8... i used to drive a 97 explorer...my question to you is it seems like there is more "play" in the expeditions steering than the explorer. I mean the steering wheel turns nice and smooth but it seems real easy to turn and u can turn it alot like almost not as responsive as the old explorer sort of. On the explorer u turn the wheel a little and the cars turns tight, it seems it takes more steering wheel turn to turn the new expedition. I dont know maybe its nothing, but thanks. Is this normal b/c im not used to a big truck? Thanks MATT

Congrats on the purchase!

The Expedition has variable power assist steering. Lots of boost ("loose") at low speed (ie parking lots), not too much boost ("tight") at highway speed.

It took me a bit to get used to at first, but now I like it. Takes me a bit to get used to the Mustang's steering every spring.

Check the tie rod ends, ball joints and the idler arms.

These are common wear items and will contribute to "loose" steering.

The variable assist steering will tend to mask the underlying mechanical faults.
