Well my '03 Expy is about ready for new tires. I'm a tire aficionado and had been ready pages and pages of customer reviews on tirerack.com, I thought I wanted some stock size Yokohoma Geolanders that would have been about $700 out the door with tax/mounting/ballancing.
Started looking on ebay for some F150 18" rims with tires. I found the 18" rims with BFG rugged trail tires could be had for under $700 most place including shipping. But tirerack users didn't sing high praises foro the BFG rugged trail tires. The other option were the Goodyear AT/S tires 275/65/18 on either the Lariat rims or the FX4 rims. I decided to get the Goodyear tires, but most of the Lariat rims had the tan/beige accents (which wouldn't look good on a silver XLT Expy). Most of those rims with Goodyears go for about $800 on e-bay + $140-180 shipping.
I called around to a few custom wheel shops in Houston and found a few FX4 sets with the Goodyears. The 1st place I called wanted $862 w tax even though I offered to pay $800 cash, he wouldnt budge. Called another place and he qouted me $1250 for the set, I laughed and told him that was more than I expected to pay. He asked what I expected to pay and I told him there were a couple sets on ebay for less than $800, but I would give him $800 cash today, so he said he would call me back. I don't know if he went to check Ebay or with his boss, but 5 minutes later he told me to come pick them up for $800.
These things really are brand spanking new, the tread still has the rubber nubbies on them and the bar code stickers on the sidewall are still on from the factory. Going to make one more trip to Ennis Fun Ford Weekend before I swap out the rims/tires and install new front brakes.
