How is your 5.4? and how long do they last?
Mine has 124k on it and I bought it with 112k. So far it still runs like a brand new car. The only things that bother me are minor. The power mirrors did work when I bought the car. Now if I move them one way, they go two directions at once. ie: If I move them out right, they will go down and right at the same time.
Thats about it, I dont know much about the motor on these, I am more old school. What are the common problems with these?

Man this post sounds familiar.
2000 Expy – Awesome vehicle never any problems, but really low mileage, high 40s’.
2005 Expy – So far so good, really unhappy with the drive-by-wire throttle response, and the doors are not aligned.
Glad to say that I haven’t had any mechanical problems
**now looking for wood to knock on**
Good luck…

I have had several Expys none of which had less than 140K on it. My current vehicle is an '00 F150 with the 5.4 with 150K HARD miles on it and other than one tune up it has been great. It has some bothers but nothing major. Exhaust leak, poor gas milage, and the tune up was a reall pain in the A** but other than that it is great. My wife's truck is an '97 Expy 5.4 with 154K and it has been flawless except for losing o2 sensors recently. My last vehicle was a '97 Expy with the 4.6 with 175K and it too ran great. The one before that was a '94 Explorer 4.0 with 230K and it too was a good one. I think I only replaced tires, brakes, and did tune ups on it. Never even needed a water pump or alternator or anything. I've either been really lucky or Ford has done some homework on their engines.

People always knock the old explorers, but like you I got 252000 miles out of my 92 with one tranny rebuild. ANd it was still purring like a kitten when I sold it. I then got a 95 Explorer and drove 189000 on it with no major replacements. Service the thing like it should be, and you'll get more than 200000 miles every time

Come on, man! You're killin' me (and the truck!)

I fail to understand why you would do that. Even if it ran ok for you, the next owner is sure to have lost longevity. I'm also fairly sure you didn't disclose that little tidbit. Changing oil isn't hard, but is probably the most important thing you can do to protect your investment.
I have a '99 and the AWD doesn't bug me. Maybe you need to change the diff. fluids!

I'm a good person, I did indeed tell the next person that the oil was that old. I sold it to him for peanuts. I left the oil go that long because I had no time to change it. I drove 60 miles each way to work, with my hours being 6a to 6p. A 12 hour shift with an hour drive to and from work. This was 6 days a week. The day off was dedicated to running errands, that I couldn't get done all week. Rough days for me, but it made me a FIRM believer in FORD and the 5.4

I have a 97 Expedition with 80k. Ive always maintained this truck(reg syn oil changes ect)The day after T giving I blew a brake line on the way to work. That was fun trying to stop but I still drove another 3 miles to get to work and had it fixed there.Recentely I've had to replace the original battery and the rear vent windows only one switch works now. I am hoping that it is just the switch. But other that that I love this Expedition....BUT I am SERIOUSLY considering upgrading to a Excursion. Again nobody will answer my questions about my upgrade in the Excursion section
