Gas mileage on '02 Expedition
Hi,
Just bought an '02 Expedition EB 4x4 5.4L with 3.73 gears and 73k miles. I know that my economy isn't going to be that of an econobox, but my trip computer was giving me a 9mpg and since I put in a K&N Air filter I get 11.8mpg on both hwy and around town. I recently read an article that says to disconnect the battery to reset the computer which will give an accurate reading with the new filter. My goal is to get the 13-16 that everyone else seems to get, should I install an FIPK kit?

Should Be Better Than That
I am new at this stuff (mods). Just bought Expe 2001 Eb 4x4/ 5.4, 114k was getting around 12 mpg city first couple of days. Spray cleaned throttle/injectors and gas additives for a couple of tanks. Trip to N. Ga. got me 16.3 mpg. Keeping around 70 mph (210-240 mile trip est.)
Will be doing airaid intake, throttle body spacer, superchip, increase tire pressure 5psi for highway, and full fluid synthetics, plus all the normal stuff plug, wires. Hope to get "to" 20 mpg hwy. Also, this car allready has an aftermarket grill on it of some type.
(Know a guy that has only done k/n intake and throttle body and gets close to 19 at 70 with same truck and no other mods)
Know another guy that gets close to 28-30 on long trips at 65 mph in explorer with super mods so who know what is possible. Some guys on these forums say better mileage with these mods are possible, some don't. But I tend to beleive people I know and take all with a grain of salt in these forum post.

20MPG
Throttle body spacer = good paper wieght!
Good for 0MPG
Good for .02MPG
16.3MPG = damn good mileage for that bad boy
Sorry to say (seriously) that 20MPG in that thing is almost a pipe dream. What year it is is key, and you don't say.

I'm Just Using The Trip Computer
On the "new" 2001 Expe 5.4 4x4 Eb with 100k miles. The good news is a jump at one point to 18.5 on the expressway after diff and transfer case service. (Just an estimate by trip computer, not based on anything except my previous readings on it of 16.3). The bad news is only thing that changed is I changed differentials fluids (rear being 2/3 below spec) and transfer case fluid (which appeared really shot - dirty and appeared to have lost most of viscosity.)
So no service had been done to these.....

Expy03: How did you calculate your 19.5 mpg? If you have not recalibrated your odometer for those large tires, your vehicle would actually be travelling 15-20% further per tire revolution thanthat a stock tire of size 255. That would put your mpg at ~22-24mpg. I don't think that is possible on 285 tires considering the increase in road friction. Just because each revolution pushes your further, it takes more than that increase in fuel to turn your tire.

Also, that only happened one time in the 55,000 miles I owned it. My Expy was a 2 wheel drive, with the 4.6.
Most of the time it was in the 15-16 mpg range. And yes the bigger tires and wheels did hurt the mpg, mostly around town.
10 inch wheels, you sure you weren't in a mini cooper?
Measure 10 inches the other way.<->
I have never tried the extra air pressure theory. I would think that stiffer side walls would help with reducing rolling resistence, and when we go to driver training at the track, we air up to 50 psi during the training. Talk about a rough ride.
Also hard to keep from spinning out in the turns.:o
Wasn't the spacers more effective on Carbs? I haven't heard anyone with a throttle body spacer that really got any better mileage.
I have found that if you plan your trips according to the wind direction, you can pick up at least 2 mpg as long as your going with a tail wind.
