Strange gas odor inside - strange findings!

A week or so ago I started to notice a fuel odor inside the vehicle, but I wasn't able to pinpoint it. There was no odor outside the vehicle, in the engine, underneath, but inside was getting very strong. Finally started sniffing around the carpet yesterday and found that the odor is coming from the rear cargo area. SPecifically, inside two of the depressions where the 3rd seat latches on. There are some adhesive pads, maybe noise absorption stickers, inside these depressions. Just before the odor started, I cleaned the depressions out with a degreaser cleaner because there was accumulated junk in there. I think the degreaser spray started to eat the adhesive or whatever these stickers are made of and it is giving off a petroleum odor. They felt soft and gooey. I scraped the 2 soggy ones out and the odor is now diminishing. What the hell are these things? ANd what are they for? Has anyone else done this?
