2wd or AWD for best MPG

Hi everyone,

I just bought a 06 Limited, black, got a great deal on end of year stock. I traded in a 98 Explorer and am amazed at the difference in ride quality. I came across my old Explorer window sticker and was surprised to find that it only listed 1 mpg better city/highway than the Expedition.

So, the question I had, even though it just seems like a stupid question to me, is what do you drive in, 2WD or AWD? My guess is that 2WD gets better gas mileage, which I have kept it in - though my truck so far hasn't risen above 11.5MPG in all local road driving.

I believe you lose 15-20% MPG in AWD in most vehicles.

Thanks - it just seems like common sense that putting power to two wheels will use less gas than four, though you are still pushing the same weight. I never took physics in school, if I had I probably wouldn't have had to ask the question.

I don't know the exact working of the new AWD system, but my 98 AWD is
2wd until a slip is detected, then it goes into AWD.
