Thoughts on an Expedition
With twins on the way, we are needing a vehicle that can handle the car seats; the F150 SCAB wont fit the rear facing seats. I'd like to keep the F150 though, so I am looking at getting rid of the two sedans (with 235K and 218K miles), and get another truck. A friend of ours has a 1997 Eddie Bauer expedition for sale that I am considering.
* 1997 Expedition, Eddie Bauer trim
* 5.4L Triton V8
* 105K Miles
* Throwing code P0302 (Cylinder 2 misfire)
* Throwing code P0304 (Cylinder 4 misfire)
* Throwing code P0446 (EVAP vent problem)
Here's the real kicker....the 4WD doesn't appear to be working. I drove the truck a few minutes ago, and in slippery snow and ice, I placed the truck in 4WD and floored the gas, only the rear wheels spun. The truck is not clean inside, but a detailing will take care of that.
The good part is, I think she would accept an offer of only $3000 for the truck, she has been "selling" it since summer, but it has actually just sat parked for that time.
I don't think any of the engine codes are that severe, and a tune up should fix them. The 4WD could be a big deal, or it could be a blown fuse (it's electronic, not manual transfer). Hard to tell without more wrench time.

The miles are nothing if maintenance was kept up.As far as room for 2 seats,not an issue.I have a 19 month old and a son due within the next 2-6 weeks.We also have a Burb,but thats the wifes.So you will have the room,but for trips I suggest the carrier that goes in the receiver.The codes are prob no big deal,especially if it sat and wasnt driven much.4wd prob needs to be looked at and can cost alot if you go to a dealer,just to have it diagnost.For that price Id be all over it.Best of luck

Pay the money and have it looked at first. I bougt a 97 Eddie B. last year with 135k and everything works and it is very clean for 5k from a high end dealer who wholesales anything that he can not get at least 10k for.
The only thing wrong with mine was the tires were down to about 35% left.
If you have to put in a t caseor parts in the engine it could cost a bunch.

I have a 2000 EB with 108,000 miles, runs like the day i bought it. Check the conection on the transfer case, sometimes they come loose. Then check the relays under the hood. There are three I can not remember which one is for the transfer case motor. I just blue booked mine yesterday it was $11,075. If you have to spend some for repairs your still ahead.

The cylinder misfires are probably the COPs. New plugs and COPs should cure the problem and people have found a set of 8 Motorcraft platinum plugs and Motorcraft COPs on eBay for the same price as 1 COP from the dealer. For the EVAP system code, check the hose assy. going to the PCV valve. It gets gummy and deteriorates from the crankcase fumes, them sucks air. Also the hose from the back of the intake to the EVAP sensor on the firewall might have rubbed through against the firewall and caused a vacuum leak.
