Post Which year Expeditions have the 4 valve heads and 300 horse motor?

I was trying to find out which Expeditions had the 300 horse motors with the 4 valve heads.

Do they really run better than the other models or no. I have a friend looking at Expeditions and he asked if I could find out.

None of them do.

You are thinking of the Lincoln Navigator which does have the 5.4 w/ 4v heads (300hp).

I have not driven one, but I would think most of the power difference would be above 3500rpm. Most magazines have tested them to be ~1 full second quicker than a 260hp 5.4 SOHC Expedition in the 1/4 mile. At the speed these vehicles will finish the 1/4 mile, I would estimate that to be about a 6-7 truck length distance in a 1/4 mile race.

Thanks Wes!

Are the Navigators basically the same as an Expedition just nicer or what. I don't think it matters to him, which truck as long as they are somewhat the same.

Do all Lincoln Navigators have the 4 valve heads and 300 horse or just a specifc year/model.

The Navigator is built on the same platform as the Expy's...they're just significantly more expensive. They have a little bit different exterior styling, too.

As far as I know they do all have the 5.4 DOHC motors...at least the '98+ models. But again, they're ~$10k more in BASE price than a nicely equipped Expedition. MSRP on Navigators is like $44-47k. If he has no problem paying that, then go for it. But, he should definitely drive one first. He might find something in that class he likes better...for the same price.

For whatever it's worth Consumers rated the Expedition better than the Navigator especially when it came to handling. They went as far to say one should save his money and buy an Expy. I personnaly own an Eddie Bauer and sat in the Nav and the only real difference was the wood trim which I'm thinking of adding.---Bob

The Navigator picked up the DOHC motor in the 1999 model year. Prior to that, it had "only" the 5.4 SOHC engine.

The Navigator is based on what we call "badge engineering". Meaning it's based on the Expedition, and is not a separate vehicle all it's own. It is to the Expedition what the Lincoln Mark 8 was to the Thunderbird, is one way to put it.

You get the nice 5.4 DOHC engine, and styling & trim items not available on the Expedition. Is it worth the big added cost over the Expedition? That's a matter of opinion, I'd have to hit the lottery to justify it, though it's a sweet vehicle.

Perhaps someday the Expy will get the DOHC motor!

A guy came up to me in the parking lot who had a Navigator, said to me there is not much difference in the two. (EXP and NAV) Said no, but how many real men do you know put a lot of chrome on their ride?

i have driven both vehicles and all i can say is if you cant afford the navigater dont drive it.it has too much power, rides too much better, way too quiet, and looks better.seriosly,it is a nice ride and yes its expensive but it a differant vehicle also.
