Question How wide can I go?

I'm swapping out my stock tires for some wider rubber. My question is how wide can I go on a 2001 with the 17" wheels?

Tire manufacturers list the recommended wheel sizes for each brand/size of tire. Officially, I wouldn't go against their recommendations.

I've seen 305/75s on 7" wide rims. I wouldn't go wider than 285/75, though.

There are a couple of expy's in town running the Lightning wheels and tires. The wheels are 18x9.5 and the tires are the Goodyear
eagle F1-GS 295-45-18!! They arent having any problems. In fact tirerack.com offers the Lightning wheels and tires as a combo for the expy! Trying to talk the wife into doing it myself.

Thumbs up

The 17's on the EB Expy are 7.5" wheels which is good but at least 8's would be better in my opinion. At least the 7.5's can handle a pretty good size tire.

The 275x60x17's are a good size but I think you could easily do 285's, what the Pirrelli's come in. Much wider and you might have a odd looking wheel/tire.

Something odd, I saw a 2001 SuperCrew with the same 17" wheels and 275x60x17 OEM BFG's and the BFG's were about 1" to 1.5" narrower in actual tread width. I'm not sure I've ever seen such a big difference in same size tire.

ShankDog,

If you get the Lightning wheels do NOT get the Lightning sized tires. They will ride terribly on the much-heavier Expedition. To compound the problem, your speedometer will be off quite a bit, too, as the L tires are much shorter than your Expy tires.

As you are aware, I have the L wheels on my Expy, but I run 285/55-18 Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires. These are plenty wide, and fill up the wheel well fine. The nice thing is that they also maintain the stock tire diameter...meaning the speedo is accurate. And with the taller sidewall than the L's 295/45s, the ride is still very good...and the Expy handles significantly better than with the factory rubber.
