Post Help Me Decide On A Truck!

As you may have seen from my previous posts I'm planning on buying a used Expy. I have found two that are priced the same.

Truck 1:
'00 Expy XLT, 5.6L, 4X4, 30K miles

Truck 2:
'99 Expy XLT, 4.6L, 2X4, 38K miles

Now the '00 is obviously much more truck and worth more. My main concern is that the 4X4 will get even worse gas mileage due to the AWD set-up. Is this a major drop, or should I not be concerned? I'd like to get 14mpg with conservative city/rural type driving. Actually, not even the MPG issue, but the difference in MPG of the two trucks.

What do you guys think?

i don't think the difference is even that much. you are either getting a real good deal on that 00 or the 99 is a rip. if they are basically the same price then go with the 00, you will be happier and get a lot more out of it when you sell it.

I don't know much about the expeditions. Does the 0 have a switch to go from 2wd to 4wd? If it does then the mileage will be pretty close to the same as the 99 it the 00 also had the 4.6. Since the 00 has the 5.4 then you might get about 1 or 2 mpg less. The best city mileage I got was 12.9 for some reason. I talk to others with a similar truck and they get 15-16.

Future mods: Supercharger, headers, NOS, tranny upgrade(heavy duty gears, clutch packs, etc.), performance torque converter, composite driveshaft, bore cylinders 30 over, new pistons, crank, and rods, get performance heads or port the ones I have, gauges for the a-pillar, new L if they still make them and I like the way it looks, and a Z06 Vette or BMW Z3.

I think it's a pretty big difference. 2WD and 4WD. I'd definetly go for the 5.4 either way. And as for the price close on both, I'd have to see both trucks to see whether that made sense or not. The big SUV market, new and secondary market, are soft. You should be able to by a preowned clean 2000 for 28k-30k. Of course that depends heavily on the market you're in.

I would however, decide whether you really want a 2 or 4 WD.

My 99 EB 4x4 with 5.4L and 3.73 rear end averages between 13-14 city driving, and about 16-17 highway. As far as the 4x4's being All-time 4x4, Yes that's true, meaning that if the rear wheels slip, the front will automatically engage....
I would definitely go with the 2000 5.4L 4X4 unless you just like the looks of the 99 better. I guess insurance and tag will be some cheaper for the 99, but the resale value of the 2000 should be more, especially since it's also 4x4....

Thaks for the input guys I had the mileage backwards, '00 38K, '99 had 31K.

We wnt and looked at them. The '99 was nice, but I saw some bodywork on it and decided to pass, then the '00 turned out to be $1K more than they first said. *** that! These were Hertz rent-a-Car retirees, but had great warranties. I just didn't like the ones in out price range, so we bought something else and are pretty happy.

We got a '00 Mercury Mountaineer all-wheel-drive with a 5.0 Stickerd new for $31K, it was built 11/00, has 12K miles, loaded, and we got it for $19K! We pick it up tomorrow... I think this will fit our needs better (Smaller, high teens gas mileage, tow two jet skis), not to mention it has a 5.0 V8. Now every vehicle I own has this engine in it, and I can work on it blindfolded... LOL!

Thanks again...

Thumbs up

Knowing that they were rental retiree's and that milage, you did good passing. Especailly the 4x4. Just my opinion.

Congrat's on the Merc. And I suppose that since it's still in the Ford Family, you can stay.

So what's the first mod?

Mom's Explorer has the 5.0 in it and it FLYS. I got caught doing 140 in an 80 (km/h mind you). The cop asked me how fast I thought I was going. I told him 100 or so and he said slow down and next time I will have the radar on hehe. I was doing 185 down the hill before (riding goverenor) then I decided to slow up, that is when the cop saw me.

Also the computer controlled all wheel drive system is mint. No slipping no sliding and with GY Wrangler RT/s tires lasting 110,000 kms. The engine will hold you in the back of your seat. Ours gets 22 MPG when mom drives and a lot less when dad and I get our hands on it .

P.S. this was 3 yrs ago when I was younge and stupid... now I have been promoted... I am just older and dumb now LoL
