Post Where is the 5w20?

Does anyone know who makes 5w20 motor oil? I'm approaching my first 2500 miles and I going to need this oddball weight on my 01 Expy!

Thumbs up

Ya, Ford went to 5w20 for the 2001's. However, it seems there is more and more out there now. I beleive Mobil 1 now has one. Try the Engines forum and just search on 5w20. Most people are finding it at their local Walmart, Kmart's and Autopart stores.

Im lucky in that 2000 5x30 is required and a Walmart close by has been selling Mobil 1 for $3.60 a quart, although each time I go by, they've only got 6-8 quarts if I'm lucky. Well there is the time they also had a case of it but, by the case it was $4.50 a quart. Funny how the high school dropout kid that hadn't yet learned the benefits of bathing had a lost look on his face when I brought it up.

I've only been able to find regular dino MotorCraft & Pennzoil that actually meet the Ford specifications for 2001.

Read you owner's manual carefully!

Mine only recommends 5W20. It requires that the oil (whatever weight) meet Ford's specification AND it must have the API starburst.

Amsoil & Redline both have the proper weight oil, but I don't know if they meet the Ford specs. At this time, I've not found a Mobil 1 product that meets the specs.

At my WalMart, the Motorcraft 5W-20 was not on the shelf. But I asked and they brought out a case from the storeroom.

Was going thru KMart today and noticied that they had 5W-20W on the shelf (Pennzoil). Read the quart bottle and it said on the back that it meets or exceeds the Ford Motor Company specifications. I don't remember all of the Specifcations but I wouldn't think they would put the bottle if it didn't.
Anyway the cost was $1.78 a quart. What is the take on Pennzoil, I used to use it all the time but quit using it long ago. Hope this helps.

Chevron has recently come out with there Supreme 5w-20 and should be available at any distributor in your area.

I wasn't aware that the Expedition was requiring 5w-20 for warranty. If it isn't required, I would caution anyone to stay away from it. You would be much better off using a 10w-30 or 10w-40 oil. The reason Ford started using 5w-30 and now 5w-20 in some vehicles is because of fuel mileage. The average person wouldn't notice any gain in mileage, but figure the total amount of cars that Ford manufacturers. It adds up to a significant figure and this allows them to produce more of their higher gas guzzling vehicles as they are required by the government to be restricted to a certain overall fuel mileage rating. This is the main reason behind the lighter viscosity motor oils. Do your engine a favor and stay with a heavier oil unless required by warranty.
