The 2001 Expeditions have some sort of tin can looking muffler hanging from the rear (very noticeable). Anyone know its purpose? I haven't seen anything like that since rust caused the mufflers to drop on Pintos.

 

that is the resonator. it drowns out the noise from the muffler to make it more quiet.

Ive noticed that on the 01's! It looks ugly as hell! If your married, take the wife around and show her how ugly it is. It would make a great excuse to get a Gibson side swept or something.

On my 01 X-EB, I would agree that it is very ugly.
It does not look near as bad though painted flat black with some high-temp paint! (that just makes it not look near as noticeable)

So it's a resonator to reduce noise level. Funny, I've never heard anyone complain about the noise level in an Expedition with stock exhaust. Seems Ford might be spending money to fix a perceived problem that may not exist. I'd rather see them spend that money on window trim pieces that don't fade, adding camber kits at the factory, upgrading the quality of the premium sytem speakers, larger stock gas tank, or easier to use horn buttons.

 

It's true. I just rode in my brothers '01 and it was quieter than our '00. Now with the recall on the tires I can hardly wait to get some P-Zeros . 285/60/17 look real nice.

Family- Have you had any problems out of those generals yet? The blackwall started peeling off exposing the whitewall underneath on my set. Two of them also started getting small knots on the sidewall,about the size of a nickle or dime.
Took it to discount tire and general okd replacing all four. The guy there said general was aware of these problems.
