Shank,

You passed me by far now. And you'd better post some pics. I'm dieing to see those lights AND those L wheels.

I've started with the wheel bug again and keep thinking the HD wheels look really good. However, before I spend $4000 or so for wheels, I'd be supercharging it!!

By the way, I installed the front polyurethane sway bar bushings. I'm sure an aftermarket bar would be better (I just couldn't find whether Helwig made one or not) but the front end is a bit more tame. Cornering is even better. It's definitly worth it for the money and ease of install.

WELCOME TO FAMILYRIDE'S POST NUMBER 500

Ok, I had to do this here in Expedition / Navigator. I just posted a reply and saw it was post number 499 for me. So, that meant that the next post was a mile stone. Although some would say I'm sick

I wonder if I get a gold plated Blue Oval? Heck, maybe even just an F150 Online sticker for my tool chest.

Now realizing how much time I've spent here, I need to get outside and get to work in the yard, or maybe wash the Expy.

Actually, this is a kind of escape. I actually relax and wind down going through this board. The problem is that I want to keep installing things . And now that last night I installed my front bushing kit (Energy Suspension Polyurethane) I've run out of things planned to do. Hmm, so what's next?

Cool

Ride-
Congrats on number #500. Your contributions are very important to our Expy forum, and it's been great exchanging information with you. BTW, I posted a pic of the billet grill on the thread.

Also, how difficult was it for the front-end bushings? Cost, supplier, and part number?

Best of luck on the next 500!

Great, I'll check it out.

The Bushings were easy. The toughest part is spreading the poly bushings that are packed (ID) with grease enough to get them over that 32mm bar. It'll challange your fingers a little.

Other than that, easy. They replaced the end links as well, but those are easy to get to and come right off. No lifting, just crawled under and did it. Probably about 30-45 minutes.

They're Energy Suspension part # 4.5173G. I got them from Sumitt Racing for $29 and change. I think you have to call to order because they are special order. Took about 4-5 weeks the second go around. The shipped ones for a 4x4 the first time. However, they did u[grade to 2nd day air to get the right ones to me.

So far I'll say they have tamed the front end. You remember I said I thought I was crazy that I lost some front end "bob" when I installed the Hellwig? Well I can say I think, it's only 2 days of driving mind you, but I think it's even better now. I hit my specail test spot and really felt the truck just going over the double dip at about 70. It feels more like the suspension is matched, and not so independant if you know what I mean. Cornering is even a little better too. Teh OEM main bushings were really easy to open. I felt that compared to the poly's, I could have torn the OEM's apart with my hands. Not sure I could actuall do it, but the poly definitly fought getting pulled apart.

And when you see the end links, the OEM have a cheap plastic sheath with chinsy rubber, where the ES end links are solid.

I'm heading over to see those pics now

Thanks for the great info. I'm calling Summit today to order the 4x4 front-end bushings from Energy Suspension.

A different question about changing the power steering fluid. Did you use a turkey baster to remove as much fluid as possible from the reservoir container?

Hey Family Ride,

Your actual number of posts is probably even higher than that, as the software seem to get "stuck" on a single numnber sometimes. I figure I have at least 10K posts, though it says far, far less. I saw it stay on 1019 for many posts, and then it's done that several other times, where that number has not changed, so there's no telling for sure just how many posts anyone has. It seems to be a issue with the software for the message boards.

Just FYI, don't mean to rain on your celebrating 500 posts!

jmartinb,
Yes. I bought the turkey baster and a piece of hose with an ID that fit perfectly. It get's just about everything out of the res. I've done it twice just to get as much as possible. It's much quieter now.

Mike,
Ya, I'm suprised at the number. Then I started noticing others numbers, WOW! Even if it's off by 100, I still can't believe it's been that many.

Question

FamilyRide-
I thought I would be this up to the top because I had a question about the front anti-sway bar and changing the bushings. I took a look at things this weekend. It doesn't look that hard, and I'm hoping to get the new poly bushings installed on the front-end this weekend.

Is the most difficult part of this job removing those old, large bushings held down to the frame with the bracket? Are those split down the back like the poly replacements? The replacements look easy to install. Also, for the sway bar ends, that apprears pretty straightforward. My only question there is how do you determine the amount of torque for the nuts?

As always, your help is always appreciated.

BTW, I was down in your neck of the woods last week on business. Too hot for May, my friend!

jmartinb,

You're right. Low 90's and a little humid. The truck doesn't run real well when it's that hot, and even worse when it get's into July/August. Today, upper 60's and clear; it's great!

And you're right on the bushings. They're split like the new ones. Putting the new ones on once you have the grease on them is much harder than getting the old ones off.

And you've got a great question on the end links. Yes, the are straight forward. As for the torque, I emailed Energy Suspension with no reply. The poly are hard to judge because it seems like you can keep torqueing and torqueing and they don't lose much shape. I did it by feel for now. So far so good.

If you find anyone with some insight as to the proper torque, let me know too!!

Good luck with them. It's really pretty easy.

Guys - hope this helps. It is out of the Chilton Manual and same for either the 4x2 or 4x4.

Stabilizer bar link nut to stabilzer bar (15-20 ft-lbs)
Stabilzer bar retainer bracket to frame (19-26 ft-lbs)

Good luck with it. Sounds like a worthwhile mod.

dbunch5-
Thanks for the info. It's a big help.

Ride-
I'm assuming it's much harder with the new ones because they are slick with grease and you have to open them to get them over the bar? ( man, you can tell I'm a newbie at this... ) And, I would guess you slab grease all over the area of the bushing that comes in contact with the anti-sway bar? That way the bar can move freely, and you get no squeak?

My questions will stop shortly...

dbunch5, excellent!! Thank you very much!!

jmartinb, yes. The grease goes inside. You can see where there are "reservoirs" sort of, that hold some grease. But the poly are very stiff too. And yes, polyurethane without grease can be very squeaky.

You'll see, it's not that bad. Let me know how it goes.
