<---------POST #1 "Who the man?"
Anyways I have a 1997 Ford Expedition XLT with the 4.6 V8. I think that the 4.6 makes good power but If I was looking to buy another one I would be looking at the 5.4. When you get the car of this size I hope that you will forget about gas mileage because you know already that it eats gas.(LOOK AT MY NAME) A full tank is 30 gallons so be ready to spend $50 on a fill up. I got to tell you the Expedition is a great vehicle and it is very dependable. I already have 90K miles and it is running like new. I hope that you do get one and believe me you will love it!

-1996 BLACK Ford Mustang GT-4.6 V8,Blackouts,K&N,2 chamber Flowmasters, Steeda wires,strut tower brace,racing spark plugs,etc.
-1/4 quicker then above^

I just got a 97 EXPY with the 4.6, bought it because it was super clean and had 48k on it. We like it alot!! 100X better than our S10 blazer. I live in a area in Wisconsin that has some pretty good hills. It would be nice sometimes to have the 5.4.
I have gotten from 12.5mpg to 18mpg, probably not much better than a 5.4. If I was buying new I would go big. I saw some window stickers last week that had the 5.4 listed and then also credited the same price.
Hopefully my next one will have the 4.5 powerstroke diesel!!

In about one week Iam going to be buying another Expedition. Its a 1997 XLT with 77K miles. I was going to go buy a 99 but the front bumper is very ugly. I dont like all the plastic. It also has the 4.6 V8. I was looking for a 5.4 but they were to much money. Iam getting the 1997 for $12,900. Iam trading in my GT. The expedition I have right now is black. The new one is going to be silver. Iam getting clear tails, corners, chrome grill, and probably some yokohamas because the michelin tires have very little tread.
The only bad thing is that it doesnt have the air suspension. But I dont really care since this one wont be used for towing. Guess the 5.4 will be in my third Expedition....someday.

4.6 in Expedition
Interesting question you have. I am turning in my 1998 Expedition Eddie Bauer 4x4 this Friday after a 36 month lease. It has the 5.4, which I THINK is rated at 215 HP for 1998. I am picking up a brand new 2001 Expedition 4x4 XLT with the Sport Appearance group on the same day. Interestingly enough, the 4.6 for 2001 now has 215 HP...which is the same output that the 5.4 had in 1998! I loved my 1998, and I am psyched about the new one too. No complaints about power in the 1998. It's a truck, so acceleration isnt all that great. But it was a great ride for three years...so good that I am getting another one!!!

Personally I would shy away from a 4.6 in a Expy unless you do nothing other than city driving and never tow anything. Don't get me wrong the 4.6 is a great engine, a buddy of mine has a '97 f150 with one that has 253,000 miles on it and it still runs fine. He uses it for a delivery service he runs in Milwaukee so it gets a lot of hard miles and not enought oil changes...10 to 12k miles. But my personal experience is I had a 97 F150 with a 4.6 and did a lot of towing, I traded it for a '99 F150 with a 5.4 and there was a world of difference.... Also the 5.4 actually got somewhat better mileage.... so there's my 2 cents
