Angry fuel economy

my 98 expedition seems to be awfully thirsty!! The estimated fuel economy ratings were 13 city 18 hwy. It is not even close to this estimate!!!!!!!! more like 9 city and 15 hwy; what is everyone else getting? It has the 5.4L engine

17.4 mpg driving 70 to 75mph and 18.3mpg driving 65 on the highway, its a 4wheel drive (2 wheel drive should get better milage)

never checked the city mileage

It was 14 to 15 mpg before the headers, catback and K&N FIDK

It all depends on who is driving.
I can get 14 around town and 16-18 on the highway at 75.
My wife manages to drag that down to 10-11 around town and 14 on the highway.

Like Andrews said, It depends on who/how you drive. I dont get what the factory estimates either. Usually about 10-11 in town and 12-14 on highway. I believe that if i changed my driving habits I could get the factory estimated MPG, but I like to be the first one from the light and always looking to pass the person ahead of me.

2000 5.4L 4x4

10 City, 12 City/Highway, 14.5 Highway

I can understand how mileage might be variable in the city, but pure highway driving should not produce the the huge disparities that some mention unless there are hills/mountains, winds and significant temperature differences, etc. You also must consider rearend gear ratio.

Whenever I mention highway figures I try to specifically include only those on relatively open, flat roads without severe wind conditions and without heavy loads...anything else would be misleading.

My miliage bites as well.

This is a spreadsheet that I keep on mine. Judge for yourself. I consider myself to be a conservative driver.

I think highway mileage can be very different between two drivers of the same vehicle. Does one zoom up the on ramp to max speed limit or gently accelerate? Does one maintain a steady speed or are they frequently slacking off then speeding up again? It also depends on where you are driving. I-10 between Houston and San Antonio is usually so busy it's very hard to maintain a steady speed. If you get way out west on I-10 towards El Paso you can have the whole highway to yourself with little other traffic.

14 city, 16.5 mixed,18.5+ highway. All of this provided you keep your foot out of it. These numbers are about three percent off, meaning they are probably a hair better than the actual post. This is due to the taller tires.

Mine varies, but...

I drive to the other side of the state every other weekend for "Cougar" football (had to throw thatin, I am a Washington state fan)! It's 325 miles and I get there on a tank. But I must confess, half of it is two lane (PASSING REQUIRED).
When I took it to Canada on a road trip of mostly flat, 70-75 MPH, it got 16.5 MPG.
On another note!!
Anyone see the Dutch Auction for JBA stainless headers for Expy's? $425
RedExpy- Did your mileage really improve THAT MUCH with headers, catback, and intake?

How to go longer between fill ups

This is not going to change your average miles, but will increase how often you have to fill up.

I noticed that with my truck I have a 27.? gal tank (however I have gotten 28.4 when almost bone dry). However, when I fill the truck up, at about 19-20 gal, the pump shuts off. When I check the gauge, it reads full. But as I mentioned before, my tank is at least a 27.? tank.

If you fill and click, fill and click, fill and click another 7 gals or so, it helps. That is at least another 70 miles!

I am not sure what causes this issue, but assume it is due to improper venting of the air the gas replaces. The gas goes in faster than the the air can get out. I have seen people say that if ou turn the pump upside down that helps, but the neck on my 2001 will not allow that as an option.

Just a tip that I have used and it does fit. HOWEVER MAKE SURE YO FIND OUT HOW BIG YOUR TANK IS. NOTHING WILL RUIN A PAINT JOB FASTER THAN GAS ON IT.

Talking Mileage

I've been getting 15.5 - 16.0 on my 2000 XLT 5.4 4X2.
I've kept mileage figures since my truck was brand new and now it has 34,000 miles.

[begin rambling]

I haven't chimed in on MPG in a while.

Around town bone stock I would get 12-13. That includes som hwy driving but in rush hour so it could be stopped. On the hwy I would get 15-16 running in the 70-80 MPH range with AC on.

After the chip, filter and exhaust:
I get about 14-15 with the same around town driving and 17-19 with the same hwy driving.

I'm now towing a 7200# boat and was scared to see what kind of milage I would get. I've heard stories from Ford truck owners of 9-10 MPG with a sizable load. Always getting out-done by Chevy's. Well so far, hwy driving at about 55 MPH I get 14+ MPG, 65 MPH drops to about 12-13 MPG average, hills and all. Around town, stop and go with that weight it's closer to 10 MPG.

A week or more ago on the way to work I reset the on-board overhead as I was getting on the frwy that was flowing pretty well. It's been cool here in north Texas so the AC was off. I got a steady 20-22 MPG strickly on the hwy with no AC for 10+ miles. When I pulled off the hwy and started in normal "city" driving, it started dropping by not much. Right now after about 1 1/2 tanks since I reset the on-board, with a lot of local stop and go towing of the boat and stop and go commuter driving, I'm sitting on a little over 13 MPG and every time I get in without the boat it's going up. My commute to work is about 22 miles and it will increase by about 2/10's each way so MPG is good, without the boat.

Now if someone would come out with a super low drag or electric compressor I bet milage would jump 3-4 MPG. I'm not sold on underdrive pulley's yet and I haven't gotten motivated to do the electric fan yet since I think to do it right, there are a few other things I'd like to do. Some gauges, manual fan for tranny/oil cooler, manual override and all this with OEM looking install in the interior! There just not a really clean place to install gauges and keep the EB Expy look and feel.

[end rambling]

You know family ride mine is just like yours and I get 14.5 around town and about 19 on the highway if you keep it under 74 about. That is with the modz listed below. It got a litte less without the modz but I only drove it about 1000 miles before I did all that stuff. Good to see that stuff is consistant....

2001 Eddie Bauer 2wd

On the interstate last summer with the air on we managed 17+ mpg @ 75-80 mph. Have not been on any trips for a while and it is registering 12mpg. I reset the meter after the vacation and all driving since (3000 miles) has been short trips less than 10 miles around town.

I had a good tail wind but I left Flower Mound TX just north of Dallas and got gas again in Demopolis Alabama. I got 21 miles to the gallon. I was just driving around 65 because it only had about 400 miles on it at that time. It was like 530 miles on that tank full. Crazy. Last trip to St. Louis was 17.5 but that was before modz. I set the computer before we left, drove to STL and drove around STL for 3 days, and drive back to Dallas and got 17.5.
