I wish I had a definite answer for you, but I don't know if the Expedition was ever offered as a standard 4x4, non-AWD, model.
My 2000 is 'AWD' (and I use AWD very loosely, as I feel it's more of an automatic 4x4). It locks into 4x4 if I flip the switch to the 4x4 setting. It isn't a traditional AWD setup, as from what I understand, it's 2WD unless it detects slipping, then it'll kick into 4x4 automatically. There really is no downside to the AWD Expy unless you are looking to do a burnout.

97-98 had 4X4 that you can run in 2HI or AWD. Some 99's had the 2HI option, but those are rare. 99% of 99-02 Expeditions were the AWD setup. Keep in mind 97-98 had the 'non P.I. heads' so you loose about 30HP, and 10 Ft/Lbs of torque. Also in 99 they revised the front bumper and instrument cluster.
