Maybe when your son is getting in and out of the back door his shirt sleeve or something like that may be getting caught on the safety switch.

I've had this happen on a Navigator and strangely enough, it was also the right door. Thought I was losing my mind. Something inside isn't quite right and I think it trips on when you slam the door shut.

I am thinking along the lines of setting it when the door shuts it was really having me pulling my hair out ;-) so I guess not much you can do with it ;-) small price to pay LOVE The truck

Wink Child safety ghost...

I also had the child safety "ghost" visit my 98 XLT Expy...
Finally fixed it with a "T" shaped chunk of rubber pencil eraser.
Make sure to make it "T" shaped or it will fall in an be a @#%&$ to get out....
Just my .02....

my mom's 97 expy did the same thing on the right door. You would have to go around and open the door from the outside to let someone out. Well, I was going to put something in there, but she went off and sold the thing. Got something different. (not going to say what but contains the letters CThaehvoye)

I had the same problem on my 98 Eddy Bauer. I had Ford replace the lacth assembly on the right rear door. This was covered under my extended warrenty. I haven't had a problem since.
