New rubber
I need new rubber under my Expo this year and am caught in the debate over the size and brand. I need a good street tire which is also capable of hitting the campground scene, and the boat ramps. I use it for towing, I don't drive 140mph, but I want very good handling, reasonably soft ride, and good wet weather characteristics. I also want a fairly full wheelwell.
I am considering the Nitto NT-404 and Proxes S/T in either 305/50/20 or 305/45/22. Possibly Pirelli Scorpion zero.
Can someone please give me some honest reviews of either of these tires? I have not found any valuable tire reviews or testing for the SUV tire market.
Thanks.

I've been running the Toyo Proxes ST on my Navi for 3 years now and think they are great. I was also looking at the Pirelli Scorpion in the beginning, but heard from people that they weren't getting very good mileage out of a set of tires. With what these tires cost, mileage is important along with handling. Another tire I would consider is the Falken. They have a new series 4 out for SUV's that look pretty nice. Good luck with your choice.

Tires
Just in case you want to go another direction, I have 33/1250/17 Pro Comp All Terrains under my Expy. On the stock 17 inch wheels. Just got back from a 2800 mile run from Chicago, Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans. The tires handle great, great road feel and can get you "camping" without any problems.
Doesnt sound like you're going that way... but I thought I'd offer it up...

A good amount of owners have gone with Mich Cross terrains. Family Ride, how they holdin up? It's about towing time isn't it?
Need to get another 15 K outta my GY Wrangler's. They did pretty good "water skiing" from Savannah to West Palm yesterday (425 mi in 6 hours with one stop and pouring rain).

...well glad you asked....
Actually I haven't stoped towing, it's just short trips. About 15 miles each way with about 7-8 miles each way on the hwy.
They felt better when I first got them than the OEM Generals. I've been towing to about 65-70 MPH (usually about 60) in hard wind (it's north Texas after all) and so far, they are fine. Not one slip in the boat ramp yet, but then again I never did (LS rear helps). Getting passed or hard wind doesn't bother me.
By boat has recently weighed up to about 73-7400# (Ful of fuel and some extra gear as well as once with 5 people in the truck).
It's a lot of boat for an Expy but it does great. I keep the Cross Terrains at the 32 or is it 35 psi? Whatever the "max" on the sidewall is. I'll try dropping them down when not towing to see if I can keep the good handling and improve the ride any. Got to experiment you know!
In the rain they really show their stuff!! Complred to the Generals that's not saying much. Anyone ever hydroplane? Anyone with the Generals know what I mean. Hit any water and "AH" that creepy "I've lost the wheel" feeling. Now I just blow right through (being careful of course) but I keep traction and don't get that "lost wheel" feel.
There you go. Of course they don't have the look of Nitto's or Yoko's but they look good and feel good, afterall, they are Michelins!

Tires
I am running the 295/45/18 ST proxies and have been happy with them. I pull a boat that when loaded is around 4000# and have not had any problems. Have only had one incident on wet ramp when pulling it out of the water, tires wanted to spin.
Tires ride fine (are a bit stiff, of course my X is lowered 2" too) and it handles great.

Familyride- I have hydroplaned-
I thought it was just me- Now I'm thinking it may just be an Expedition thing. I immediately took off those General 275/70/17's from the 2000 Expy and slapped on my 295/65/16's & Atlas wheels from my 1999 S Cab. I never hydroplaned in the Scab, but I have felt that "I've lost the wheel feeling" on more than one occasion- and you and I are from the same area- so you know we can get a months worth of rain in 15 minutes sometimes. I have hydroplaned and ice skated in my Expedition. Both events are Maalox Moments-
Since I strapped on those Goodyear Eagle LS', I have only hydroplanned (A little bit) once, but I hit a deep puddle then at about 45 MPH. They seem to displace water better than those 295/65/16 Eagle GT-II's I had.
Next tires- Nitto 315 or 305/50/20
I have the same tires (LS) on both my trucks, and I have not had a problem on either. I paid $140.00/tire.
