You can change both ends though. It will have a profound effect on your performance if you are or are intending to run over-size tires / wheels.

I've heard of guys disabling their 4x4 system so that they can install gearing on a piecemeal basis. Do the rearend first then the front when you can afford. Don't know what the disabling process entails, but I'd assume with all of the electronics, it wouldn't be too much more than a fuse or switch????
