Towing with a 4.6L
Folks,
Does anyone have a 4.6L Expy- and have actually towed with it? I don't know what the tow/haul ratings are for it, and it seems to me that Ford prefers you get the 5.4L to tow since it's a part of the tow-package option.
Has anyone towed with a 4.6L? If so, how much weight and how fast could you go?
I had a F-350 dualie pass me in my Expy between Dallas 7 Shreveport going up hil and 80 MPH. I know I won't be going that fast in my Expy, but I'd like to at least run 70.
I also have a 4.6L SuperCrew- I never planned on towing anything with either one, however, I must this weekend. I'm thinking about getting that 6' x 12' U-Haul trailer to move a bedrom set in one trip from Killeen, TX to Plano, TX. (186 miles)
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks.

No problems
Folks,
I ended up towing that trailer 612 miles. 204 miles of it was with Empty trailer, and the last 408 was with a full load.
I had a U-Haul 6' x 12'. Internet says it weighs 1,250 empty, the trailer guide says it's 1,800 empty, may load 2,600, total weight 4,400.
The only thing I could get in that trailer after I finished loading it was, a few suitcases. With roughly 4,000 lbs in tow, 4 adults and 2 dogs, we had no problem cruising 70 - 75 MPH, even 80 a time or two, in 96 degree Texas heat with the AC blasting. I passed a Suburban, and another Expedition towing similiar trailers. I even passed a Semi going up hill. MPG sucked, I was stopping every 1h:30m to get gas. (Every half-tank) I'd take a guess of about 10.1 MPG.
I haven't been so proud of a vehicle since my wife & I drove our loaded (luggage) 1993 Accord EX 4-Cyl Sedan from Louisiana - California, through the grapevine hills in Cali, right past the warning signs to cut off the AC to prevent overheating; with the AC on, past a number of overheated Semi's, buses, and V-8 cars.
I tried driving with the OD off, but I'm not used to seeing my truck at the 2,500 RPM mark, so I switched it back on. Initially, even with it on, he truck was around 2,500 at 60 MPH, but after a while, it dropped back down to 1,500. It was like the computer was reassessing shift points to compensate for the added weight.
When I got my S'Cab in 1999, and when I got my Expy in 2000, I'd said I'd never tow anything heavier than my blue oval ford emblem/trailer hitch. But, after this weekend, I realize that towing is fun. Now I want something that can realy tow- Like an F-350 Dualie Crew Cab, V-10. (I don't like diesel, and yes, I realize that the diesel can out tow the V-10)
Thanks for everyone's help. Even though I thought I'd only be towing it 186 miles, and ended up towing it 612 miles, it was all good.
After 10 years of towing trailers behind (10-wheeled M-35 A2's) aka Deuce & a half's and (HMMWV M998) aka Hum-Vee's, this was the first time I EVER towed anything with a vehicle I owned.
It turned out to be a good trip.
