Synthetic vs. Regular

Just changed my oil yesterday, and decided to bite the bullet and buy Synthetic oil. Mobil 1 Super Syn, (4.89 a qt!! Took me 5) Luckily the cashier made a mistake in my favor and only charged me for one. I also purchased a Motorcraft filter, an original Ford product. Initially I noticed a bit more kick and a smoother ride. Could this be the result of the oil or is it just me???

It's just you. For me, detailing my X seems to add about 20 HP, a very cost-effective performance mod.

Your engine only took 5 quarts? Be sure to check the oil level.

I think its just your in your mind. Kinda like when your truck is washed, waxed, and fully detailed it seems to accelerate faster, brake better and ride smoother. At least I think it does.
Anyway, I run Mobil 1 in my truck also, but i figure it like this. Using the synthetic I change it every 6,000 miles instead of 3,000 miles if I used natural. Consider this, if i use dyno oil it costs $1.77 a quart. In two oil changes I use 10 quarts of oil and 2 filters. quart of oil at $1.77 X 10 = $17.77 + filter at $2.50 X 2 = $5.00, all total is $22.77 for two changes. Now for synthetic: 5 quarts each @ $4.77 X 5 = $23.85 + 1 filter @ $2.50, totals $26.35. Ok, with all that said, I would save $3.58 every 6,000 miles if i used the 'cheaper' dyno oil. The way I see it, it is well worth the extra $3.58 to save my time in changing oil only once every 6,000 miles as opposed to twice every 6,000. I also reep the benefits of using synethic. So when I buy 5 quarts of Mobil 1 I just think of it this way and I doesnt hurt at all buying the 'expensive' stuff.

Damn, Paul beat me to it. Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks a clean truck performs better. Also, I knew something didnt seem right when I was posting my last post. Do all the same math for 6 quarts of oil. I end up spending about $5 more for a single Mobil 1 change as opposed to two dyno oil changes. Still well worth the extra.

Yes a clean truck does run a lot better. But seriously the synthetic oil does seem to have better results in my truck than before with the regular oil. As far as the level is concerned I did check it, and the stick did'nt lie to me, "max" is what it said. I do have a 4.6 so I am assuming that the 5 quarts was enough...
