Going to look at a '99 F-250

I'm going to look at a '99 F-250, 4x4, Extended Cab LB tomorrow. It has a V-10 with automatic trans and has 52,000 miles on it. Are there any problem areas on these I need to look out for? Those of you with V-10's, do you like them? Did they come with posi rears or was that an option? How is the aftermarket for these motors? Are there cat back exhausts and other upgrades for them. Thanks for the help.

I just purchased my 99 F250 SD, SC, 4x4 V10 and I love it. Don't know about the rear gears, but I have seen in several catalogs from several outfits that make cat back systems for the V10, several places that make cold air intakes, TB spacers etc. I love the power, gas mileage is 14.5 on the highway and less in town, but something you will have to understand upfront, but I believe it is a great truck, and I would not do it differently again if I had the chance.

Good Luck.

FWIW, the '99 V-10s were 275 HP, while the '00 and up V-10s produce 310 HP/425 FT/LBS Torque. A friend has a '99 V-10 with 100,000+ miles on it with zero problems. It appears that the engines will run for more than few miles.

A hint for checking what type of rearend it has: There is a sticker in the driver's side door jam that lists a lot of info about the truck. There should be a code number or letter under the words "axle". I'm pretty sure that if that code is a number the rear is an open diff, and if it is a letter the rear is a limited-slip diff. Someone correct me if I've got that backwards.

Well, I picked up the V-10 F250 today! So far I love it. Much more power than the '03 5.4 Crew Cab I drove the other day. I also checked the axle codes and it has 4.30 ls rears. That should pull the car trailer with no problem! What was different between the '99 and the '00 and up V-10's to jump the power from 275hp to 310hp?
