Exclamation Launched Plug!

Greetings all,

My dad's '99 F-250 w/ the V-10 spit a plug yesterday, not a good thing. It is a extended cab, long bed 4x4 with about 54,000 miles on it. It certainly does not get beat, does some light towing infreqently, I only talked to my dad briefly, i assume the warranty will cover it, he has an extended 100,000 mile warranty, thank goodness! So, we've all read this like a million times on the L board, anyone know of a V-10 or anything else spitting plugs? Anyhelp is appreciated. Oh and being that my dad is an old man, he has NO mods, LOL.

thanks in advance!

Post Sounds expensive...

I know from reading posts at some other Superduty sites that some 99 and early 00 V10 had that plug blowing problem but it seems to be very rare in later models. I don't recall what causes it-something about the threads in the plug holes' being too shallow or something like that.

Hopefully it will be covered under his ext warranty becuase I know it will expensive to fix. The thread area has to be rebuilt and then re-tapped-at least that was the procedure to repair it that a few guys mentioned. Good luck.

Can you not install a helicoil kit? Any way to head this off by thread lock or having the plugs re-tapped?

Basically from what I have read in the L forum all the mod motors only have 4 threads to hold the spark plug in. This has happened on n/a 5.4 and I think the 4.6 but I'm not for sure. This is a reocurring problem with the ford heads. On the L forum there is a sticky thread where you can complain about this to ford.

My brother is a PRO-E engineer (Mechnical engineer) and he looked at some of the photos on these threads and he was supprised that no one outside of Ford has offered a solution. He said if Ford offered a solution they would have to fess up to the problem.

He asked if I would mind testing a "Lock" for the plugs. He said more than likely 99.9% of tossed plugs were lose plugs spit out with one to two threads attached, so keeping the plugs secure is what we need. He is working on a lock that will hold the plug in place. It won't be a 2 minute install, but how often do you change your plugs? Once he gets something off the CNC, I'll let you know.

Until then, I will make it a habit to check my plugs every weekend, that 30 minutes may save me BIG$$$

Question Plug torque???

While we're on the topic, does anyone happen to know the proper torque for a V10's plugs.

This thread got me thinking I might just check mine this weekend just to be on the safe side,

Exclamation Update!

Well $3600 later, warranties are a good thing, the truck is home. It had the entire head replaced, exhaust manifold and such. Ford was pretty good about the whole thing. Also did you guys know how they replace these things? They lift the ENTIRE CAB off of the fram and do it that way, pretty cool eh? Well this is ends this episodes of My Ford Truck.
