To answer your question on the gas mileage for the V-10, the average is about 12.5. You will see some claims significantly higher and lower but 12.5 seems to be the all around average. I have tried keeping out of the pedal to keep it below 2000Rpms and it hasn't made any difference in mileage. So I drive it like I want to when I want to and I still get 12.5 to 13.5 with it. That is a 75/24 mixture of highway/city.
If your worried about mileage buying one of these trade it in a car, otherwise enjoy the power.

I currently drive a 2001 F150 Lariat 4X4 with the 5.4 and i get about 13.5 average. I had just eard how horrible the milage was with the V-10, and i would prefer it over diesel, i think. Milage is not a huge concern, just a selling point.
Can't go with a car, just trying to decide if i can justify a diesel or not.
Thanks
Eric

If your getting 13.5 with a 5.4 in an F-150 the mileage difference to owning an F-250 with the V-10 is most definitely not horrible. I used to average 15-16 with the V-6 manual in my F-150, compare that to the size of my CC,LB 4x4 with the V-10 and 12.5 to 13.5 with my foot into in my mind is great mileage.
One other factor to consider for diesel besides the upfront price difference is the cost of diesel. Currently in my area diesel is 30 cents higher. Add the increased maint cost and that in my mind reduces the issue over better mileage/cheaper cost.
Now for sheer power and mods to the motor, the diesel is the better choice.
Good Luck

I have owned a pickup of one kind or another for the past 19 years and I can tell you from experience that Ford's V10 getting 11 to 14 mpg is not that bad. We're talking 3/4 & 1 ton pickups that weigh 6000 to 7000lbs here and can really move out when you mash the throttle or tow 10K lbs without breaking a sweat. That capability isn't going to come without a price.
I owned a Ford Ranger 4x4 with that little 3.0L V6 for a few years and it only got 15 to 16 mpg and could barely get out of it's pwn way, so I don't buy the whining about Superduties with V10s getting bad mileage. Sure they do...compared to a Subaru 4 cylinder.
Compare the Triton V10 to the other gas engines the competition puts in their HD pickps. None of them get any better mpg than our V10. GM's 6.0L maybe is slightly better but you give up alot of torque for that extra 1 to 2 mpg. The new Hemi in Dodge's trucks is lousy too. I was reading some posts at another site and the Dodge guys are getting about the same as the V10 with about 50lb-ft less than the Triton V10. GM's 8100 and Dodge's 8.0L V10 are torque mosters but the mileage is even worse.

Bike-nut, be nice...
Now if you want RAW Tire Burning Brute Torque force, there is NOTHING out there close to the 7.3...
The 6 and 6.6 liter engines are a different breed!!!
The V10, well its a gasser...what can you say..
No, I agree with you guys its the best selection in the big trucks..hands down..just pulling you guys chains..

You guys are awesome!
A new member, Scoob, starts a thread to talk about his new V10 and maybe get some info about it and you diesel guys pop in to let him know it's inferior to your PSDs!!
I love it! You guys just can't help it, can you?? Bought top 'o the line and gotta beat your chests when someone shows up with a thread about a weaker engine! Come on guys-you gotta admit it's a bit funny! Hey at least we all got Superduties though!
Hey I gotta go...some new guy just started a thread in the Ford Ranger forums about his new 4x4 Ranger 3.0L V6 and I have to go let him know my V10 puts down more pavement grinding torque than his V6 toy!

Well put Hillhound. Seems as if some are insistent in putting down others' choices when it comes to vehicles, despite the fact that they are ALL Fords (and as you pointed out, all SDs). I thought the "my **** is bigger" stuff was reserved for owners of other makes.
Scoob - don't worry about these V10 bashers - you got a great rig, and can't wait to see pics of it. I hope you aren't disappointed by the measly amount of power that these rigs put to the ground.
AgDoc - In mainly city/rush hour highway driving I generally average 11.5-12mpg. This has been pretty consistent over the 22K+ miles I have put on it so far. Unloaded highway driving it goes up to about 15mpg or so - with an all time best of 16.2mpg (think I had the wind at my back the whole time!). Loaded down (~8K lbs) through the mountains it drops down to 7.5-8.5mpg.
Feel free to ask any questions you have. There are enough of us here who screwed up and bought a gasser that we might be able to help you.
