02' F250 gas V8-What tranny, mileage, problems, etc.

i'm looking at an 02' F250 S/C short bed 4X4 w/ a 5.4 and auto. if it has 3.73's, what kind of mileage should i expect; what about 4.10's? how can i tell what gears it has?

what tranny will it have, the 4R100?

how do you tell if it has limited slip?

are there any typical problems that these trucks had?

thanks

I've got a 2002 F-250 SD. It's a Crew Cab, 4x4, 5.8L , 3.73LS, Long Bed so it is a heavier truck, but I get on average 12.25 mpg. I've got 11,000 miles since March of 2002 and the low was about 10.5 mpg and the high was about 13 mpg which is a split of city and highway type driving. The last 2 tanks were a round trip from NJ to Williamsburg VA, about 400 miles each way all Highway. I got 14.75 mpg down and 15.25 mpg back. Averaged under 50 MPH down and about 67.5 MPH based on Door to Door times. We hit about 2 hours of extra traffic on the way down traffic. Most speeds were in the 80 to 85 mph range on the way home.

As for your other questions, I'm sure the other will be able to answer them.

Good luck, George K

I don't have the codes for the axle, but if you open the driver's side door, there should be a Vehicle Certification Label on either the door or the door jam near the door latch. This will have a lot of info about the truck on it including an axle code and transmission code. I don't have the info for the '02s, but unless they have changed things I have the codes for 2000 that should give you what you want.

Axle codes:
31 — 3.73 non-limited slip, F-250/Excursion
C1 — 3.73 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
32 — 4.10 non-limited slip, F-250
C2 — 4.10 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
33 — 4.30 non-limited slip, F-250
C3 — 4.30 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
36 — 4.56 non-limited slip, F-250
C6 — 4.56 limited slip, F-250

Transmission codes:

B — Four-speed manual, T199, F-Series (Mexico sold units only)

W — Five-speed manual, Dana ZF (M5HD-W), F-Series

E — Four-speed automatic overdrive (4R100), gasoline engines, F-Series/Excursion/F53 recreational stripped chassis (motorhome)

9 — Four-speed automatic overdrive (4R100), diesel engine, F-Series/Excursion

6 — Six-speed manual, Dana ZF (M6HD-6), F-Series

If you're wondering, this info is off a CD I bought on ebay. It's a copy of the service CD that Ford dealers use in there shops. I'd highly recommend you look into one for your model year, if you like to do as much of your own repairs as possible.

thanks for the replys guys. i ended up passing on the truck. i want something mint and it wasn't.

i'm impressed to know that this truck had the limited slip 3.73. the accelleration was amazing compared to my 3.55 4.6L. i can't imagine what a 4.10 or a 4.56 would feel like!
