6.0L vs 7.3L

Hey guys, I'm trying todecide what type of truck I want from ford, and one of the ones I'm thinking of is a SD, I don't really need one this big, but at the same time everyone needs one this big right ... and I want to get a diesel if I get the F250.. but I've noticed there are 2 diesels.. the older 7.3 and the new 6.0

What is the advantages and disadvantages of both? is the newer 6.0L having any problems? etc..

any and all info you got would be great.

Thanks
Chris

Hmmm,

First let me say, you can get alot of diesel info. at www.dieselstop.com

BUT~ before you go there, let me say: If you buy a new 6.0L right now, you will most likely have a fine fine truck with no problems. At the dieselstop, you will see alot of talk about problems with the 6.0 still around, dont let that discourage you!

There were some glitches with the early build date trucks, but they're coming off the line clean now.

Adavantage of 6.0L: More power, quieter, more economical and the latestest and greatest. This is definately a fantastic motor, but there's the 'growing pains' issue. Also, The EXCELLENT Torqshift transmission is available only on the 6.0

Advantage of 7.3L: Tried and true. Bulletproof. And if you find one you like, there's a $4000 rebate available!!

$4000?!? Is that a local rebate in CA or is that a new one hot off the presses? It's only $2000 in my area, at least thru tomorrow.

I read a clip in the local paper that the big 3 will be rolling out some larger rebates this month due to the low sales in May though.

ctupton,
I second what bikenut said. Thedieselstop.com is the best site for info on Ford diesels. As for which is better, the 6.0L package looks like it has a brite future, but has a black eye because of some early bugs. The 7.3L has been around in its current form since '95 and has always been the class leader. You can get a better deal on the 7.3s right now because the 6.0 is the new and desireable option. Drive both, decide which one is the best for you and your pocketbook and get it.

What these guys are saying is true...

I will approach it from another angle however...

The engines power bands differ greatly...If you want off idle torque monster the 7.3 is the way to go...If you are not going to tow as much and use your truck for transporatation then the 6 liter will probably suit you...the 6 liter is more smooth pulling power engine..the 6 liter is a higher revving engine..

As far as mods, the 7.3 parts are cheap, the 6 liter is going to cost you...

I have customers that use their trucks to pull backhoes and the 6 liter is not that strong..once it falls out of its power band...the 7.3 always pulls right off idle...they dont care for the 6 liter..I have customers that are looking for the old 7.3 trucks...

The Duramax is the same way...it pulls once the revs are up, but wont even spin the tires from standstill..

Good luck in your decision.

Thanks guys

the 7.3 will fit budget better but the 6.0L will fit my driving habits according to Mach... Actually the 5.4 would prob. do everything I need but I'd have to kick my own a$$ if I bought such a big impressive truck with that motor.

how much quicker is the 6.0L vs the 7.3L
I actually think that the F250's might be out of my price range (I'm waiting on an insurance settlement from a wreck I had in Jan. but have no idea how much or how little I will recieve) so I've been looking at the F-150 kingranch, the lightning, and the F250.... so you see there really is no rhyme to my reason hehe.. Think I'm going to count out the Lightning since it doesn't have a backseat of any sort and just can't justify all that money for the lack of practicality.. (which sucks I really like the L's but reality is setting in) Second pick would be the F-250.

If price is an issue, have you considered a slightly used SD? I've been watching for trucks with less that 20k miles, and they are out there. You can find used '02s for around $30k right now. Just a thought.

a used 02 PSD for 30k? how equiped? hadn't really thought about it since for most cases it is cheaper to buy a new one than a almost new one with the low intrest rates being offered.

but if it is 10k off then that is awsome.

Here in Austin they are plentiful...You can get a real nice truck for that price..Probably a 350 SRW CC auto 4X4...I prefer the 7.3 because they are tuneable...But thats just my opinion...I still get 18+mpg at 400hp, running hi 13's..quarter..

If you want me to look for a truck for you email me at rbabola@281.com

Ya, just looked at some prices...I saw several 350 cc 4x4, 2000's with 30-50K for less then $30K...

Supercab 2001-2002 4X2 would be cheap...$20-25K...

Yeah, I'd love to have one too. I grew up driving big pickups all over. Sadly I'm more of a city slicker now so the F150 and Expedition will have to do. Maybe someday we'll get a 5th wheel trailer and have a reason to own a big pickup again.

Accually I think the 6.0 suffers from turbo lag because of it's small(for a diesel) displacement. If you put a 4 inch turbo-back exhaust on a 6.0 the turbo would spool just-off idle and get that low end power everyone complains about it lacking.
