Question New 6.0L ?

I have an 03 6.0 and when you first start it surges or chugs at low RPM. Has anyone Heard of this happening to a new 6.0? I thought I read a post about this a while back but I cant find it.

Thanks a lot bikenut for the help I talked to some of the guys over there. You seem to know a lot about diesels, would it hurt to tow in hot weather with 10w30 oil?

Lol! I dont know too much about diesels! Mach1 is more knowledgeable on this site than I. You can feel free to ask me whatever you want though and I may know the answer

But, I do have one and I do have the cold start problem
There is supposed to be a new reflash in August to fix it, but Im not holding my breath. I have been dealing with Ford on problems since this truck was brand new and this is their last chance before I take action.

Needless to say, Im a bit Pissed about spending nearly 40K on a truck that should not have been released yet due to bugs.

So, you are still on your Factory fill of oil and you're having the romp and/or rolling idle problem? Mine didnt start until the first oil change to 15/40.

~~But to answer your question, you will be just fine towing with 10/30.

On that note, have you considered a good set of gauges? I just ordered a x-monitor just so I know when Im reaching limits and can back down.

Yea I hear ya Mine started doing it after the first oil change to 15-40, one of the guys over on the other site said to switch to 10-30 and the romp will go away. I may just have to live with the idle surge prob, because i dont want to worry about my engine towing in hot weather with the 10-30.

I really think you're fine with the 10-30, but I understand being picky about oil. Its second only to politics and religion as a Hot topic! lol

Im only using 15/40 because I get it in Delo 400 free. Otherwise, I would go with what fixed the problem. BUT, it should'nt matter and Ford needs to fix the glitch IMO.

Thanks BK...Did you try just once to see if its the oil in yours...I have heard both ideas, i am interested in the August flash...If its the oil, then I dont think a flash will help and visa-versa...

Im coming up on an oil change and Im considering buying some 10/30 just to see if it helps before I go for another reflash.

Im coming up on 10K and suddenly my mileage has gone up about 1 mpg recently (?)

Hi Bad00

I'm just now learning about this 6L. Like Bikenut says..its all there on TDS 6L forum.

Before i did first o.chg from 10/30 to 15/40, i also noticed how the idle was in my words irratic. May/maynot be normal?

After the o.chg...engine romp/bluish smoke. Idle is still "irratic". Althou not all the time..hence..irratic/not consistent.

Not sure i understood you...did you already tow w/10-30 oil? Currently your engine has 15-40 oil.

Book says not to tow when ambient temps. are 50deg + w/10-30 oil. TDS gets into this "when to change oil" Was somewhat confusing to me, also some contradictions. So...long story short.......

At that time temps. here were 85+ deg. everyday and climbing.
Talked w/dealer..he said same thing..do not tow w/1030. It was changed out at 1465miles. I had them do it..its on record. I am not telling anyone to do this...this is just what i did. This was not an easy decision given all i had read on TDS.

Good luck...OT

btw...still on OEM settings/parts. Hopefully my glitches are only minor ones? I can live with for the time being. Engine runs great/no power loss. For me major change, some concerns but no regrets so far.

Hmmm,

The factory fill of oil is 10/30 right?

And they say not to tow for the first 500 miles right?

So if (for example) Im at 1500 miles and still have the factory fill and I tow. Then what?

Frickin Ford REALLLY pisses me off with their utter unprofessionalism and idiocy. This is just another example; contradictory information

They sell a truck with problems they have no idea how to fix. They leak, squeek and the paint SUCKS on nearly ALL Fords.

...Eh, Ill stop for now. I tell ya though, if they dont fix this $40K PICECE OF CRAP in the next visit, Im going for a buy back and that will be IT for Ford for me.

Hi Bad00....see what you started

Hi Bikenut...i hear ya. 500mi. before towing etc. Thats what i was going by. The set back for me was FMC did not list in the OGS book..something like "change the factory 10/30 oil to 15/40 before towing etc" It does say what to use when towing. Remembering the 50+deg. temps. 10/30 VS. 15/40.

I found out about that on TDS. Then had to make decision was i changing to heavy oil to soon? Hence not easy decision for me.

Also wonder how many out there towing w/10-30 oil because lack of info. by FMC? Could be alot of folks doing it? JMO!

The engine generates trememdous heat.. combined w/ambient temps + towing maybe max. load..i cant see how 10/30 would hold up? I know i wasnt gonna do it, but thats just me.

What happens if you dont know and tow? that's a good question.

Anyhow buddy, if you dont mind me asking, whats going on w/your 6L. OK if no reply, i understand.

OT

Ya, it is rediculous that they dont make something like that Very Clear... but by what I've seen, Im not surprised

To make it short, here is my list so far:

1. Bell housing oil leak
2. Horrible cold starts -very rough, rolling
3. Rolling idle intermitently
4. Crappy orange peel paint job
5. squeeky belt
6. BAD fuel mileage (6mpg towing 8K and 14mpg empty!)
7. less power now than when it was new.
8. Clunk in front end when moving from a stop after sitting.
9. CRACK in paint on both sides of cab where the seem is at the corners under the rear window
10. Unknowledgeable service departments
11. Idiots at Ford who dont even know how to fix THEIR own product!
12. we will see

BK...some of the guys were having good luck with changing the oil viscosity and the cold rump..you might try that, I would think it would be worth it to see if it gets better...

As far as Ford goes...you cant change that...Sometimes I wish I could..

They have just about worked out these problems on the 6...

Was yours before the 2003 year???

I was at my buddy's place and he had a 6 running mid 14's...4X4 CC LB..I did not hear any cold rump...I can see if they have any ideas...

Good Luck...If it were me, i would try a different oil...
