Angry 2001 PSD with Auto Tranny Problem

Well, we just got back from the Ford Dealer and with 42K miles the PSD with an automatic transmission lunched the transmission today. My understanding is the intermediate clutches in the tranny went out.

We have pulled a 16 foot trailer about 400 miles over the life of the truck and always with the truck out of overdrive.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

What was the build date on the truck? From what I've gathered the first 9 months of 01 were built with "slushbox" transmissions. Basically some lower quality parts made it into the mix I think. If you've want more info look over at www.thedieselstop.com

We took delivery of the truck the week of Thanksgiving 2000, so it had to be a very early truck!! I will get the transmission number on Monday --- right now it is at the Ford Dealer -- all torn apart!!

Nothing unusual...thats just the "legendary" Ford 4R100. Just a total piece of crap...like most Ford tranny's.

BTS trannys are good, only problem is the $3000+ pricetag on them. If I end up buying the 02 a friend is trying to get me to buy and that tranny lets go it will be a BTS. No more messing around, I've had enough tranny problems already.

Well, I picked the truck up today and had a chance to talk with the mechanic who fixed it, sounded as if he really knew what he was doing.

That having been said, he told me that when he pulled the drain plug in the tranny there was so much material that he had to push it out of the way with a screw driver to get the material out of the way so that he could drain the fluid.

He indicated that a needle pack was never installed by Ford and that is what caused all of the trouble, second gear clutch pack, third gear clutch pack, new planitary gears, new needle bearings, etc.

Ford picked up the repairs, and I am grateful for that, but I have one question --- why was there no metal in the pan when they changed the transmission fluid at the same dealer at 34K miles?

Why did the transmission lunch in 7K miles after they serviced it??
