V10 F250 Crewcab or a 2500 quad cab Ram w/Hemi??
Selling my F150 to move up to a 3/4ton..
It's between these two trucks now. Both are 4x2 longbeds w/auto Tranny.
I pull (on occasion/6-10 times a year)
a 7000lb (unloaded)TT and also a 5800lb cargo trailer for work. (5-6 times a year)..
I just got back from test driving a 2000 F250 CrewCab w/the V10.... Nice truck..
I am going to look at a 2003 Dodge 2500 quad cab (4 doors, but smaller) with the Hemi engine...
Any opinions on either of these two? How do you all suppose the Hemi will compare to the V10? Its got gobs of Hp and torque so i'm thinking it might hold its own while getting a lil better MPG....
Anyone drive or own one?
Thanks...

Here's the specs:
Ford 6.8L Triton V10 - 310 HP and 425 ft-lbs of torque
Dodge 5.7 L Hemi V8- 345 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque
I've driven my Dad's 2002 V10, 3.73 ratio, 4x4, supercab, 8' bed and it has PLENTY of power to do the tasks you require. I've loaded down w/ 3 ton of gravel and trailered vehiclesw/ it (not at the same time) and it did it w/ out breaking a sweat
I have no basis to judge the Dodge.

In all fairness, if you are looking at the V10, you should compare this to the 8.3 V10 from Dodge.
All of the above assumes you are content with a gasser. Have you considered a diesel?

I own a hemi, but I don't think it will be stronger then the V-10, the V-10 makes way more torque. Dodge is coming out with a 6.1L hemi that will have 440hp and probably close to 500torque, but isn't due out till late 05/06. It is to replace the old Dodge V10. Gas milage is anywheres from 12-19mpg depending on how you drive, I have a very heavy foot and get 12.8 around town, 18 or so on the highway, but my truck is a reg cab short box half ton and is the lightest you can get.
Hope this info helps you out.

The Ram and Viper will get a V10 based on the 5.7 OR 6.1 Hemi and this will replace the current 8.3 and NOT the 6.1.
But who knows.

Does the HD ram even come with a V10? I thought that was only the SRT-10. Now, looking at the hemi, you would have to see where it makes it's peak torque and compare it to the V10. If you have to rev the Hemi to the redline to get a load moving, then you aren't going to gain anything in mileage. Check them out, if possible, test each one with a trailer and see what's up. Good choice by not considering a Cummins.

A friend of mine has a half ton hemi power and torque is great. He has a boss snow plow on it it does a great job pushing it and we had some pretty heavy snows last year. Gas mileage sucks he is getting 10-11 with it. I would suggest dodge with cummins diesel atleast test drive one. I think you'll be very happy with the cummins performance. One added advantage with cummins they come with a 100,000 mile warranty. I don't think the PSD comes with that good of a warranty

If you want to compare the V10 to a 5.7L Dodge Hemi you need to look at the lower rpm torque numbers to understand why the 6.8L V10 totally out-classes the Hemi. The higher HP is only part of the picture and for towing the torque numbers are much more important, right dhouck??
The 6.8L V10 makes 400lb-ft at 1900rpms and peaks at 425lb-ft at 3250rpm.
The Hemi only makes about 300lb-ft at 2000rpm and peaks at 375 way up at 4200rpm. And by most accounts the mileage is the same or worse than the larger 6.8L V10 from Ford.
What rpm range do you spend most of the time in towing on the highway? Look at the numbers and it's easy to see which engine will keep the truck in lower gears more often, especially on hills.

Oh, I see that they have discontinued the V10 option in the HD Rams. I didn't realize that the Hemi replaced it. I thought the Hemi was to only replace the 360. That tells you how in touch I am with DCX product.
I stand corrected.

I suggested a diesel because of fuel mileage. If he is gonna drive it every day he does not want a gas hog atleast not when gas is $2.00 a gallon. I didn't say that the ford V-10 didn't out class the hemi. I just said from what i have been told the hemi has good power, but the gas mileage sucks. I have driven the ford V-10 with a 5 speed the power and torque was great. But gas mileage was not very good. I only suggested a diesel because of the extra power and torque of a diesel. Plus much better fuel mileage. After all I thought that was one of the reasons for these boards was to give our opinions about what kind of luck we have had.And what we liked or did not like about our trucks. And to maybe help someone to decide what the best choice is.I THOUGHT THAT WAS CALLED FREEDOM OF SPEACH.

I simply stated a diesel would do the job better and cheaper,Than a gas hog hemi or V-10. I don't care if it is a Cummins,PSD,or Duramax. Diesel is better than gas in a heavy duty truck. Even if you don't tow much the hemi and the V-10 are gas hogs.
